Applications of Various Sensors in Mobile Phones

Every time I look at my phone,

I see that it contains various sensors.

The functions of these sensors are not all clear.

Today, I will list the various sensors found in mobile phones.

Applications of Various Sensors in Mobile Phones

The arrangement is based onmost commonly used -> least commonly used.

Generally, the more sensors there are, the higher the price.

Sensor Type

Core Function

Corresponding Application Scenarios

Beidou / GPS Positioning Sensor

Receives satellite signals to obtain geographical location and speed information.

Map Navigation (Amap / Baidu Maps), delivery / ride-hailing positioning, exercise trajectory recording, location sharing, check-in.

Fingerprint Sensor

Identifies user fingerprint characteristics.

Fingerprint Unlock, Fingerprint Payment (WeChat / Alipay), fingerprint encrypted files / apps, fingerprint authorization operations (e.g., confirming transfers).

Vibration Sensor (Piezoelectric)

Detects vibration signals, perceives touch or external vibrations.

Phone Vibration Feedback (key presses / notifications), Touch Sensing (some full-screen gestures), Drop Detection (in some models).

Accelerometer

Measures linear acceleration, perceives motion state and device orientation.

Automatic Screen Rotation, step counting, photo stabilization, health tracking (running / cycling data recording), Shake Interaction.

Light Sensor

Detects ambient light intensity.

Automatic Screen Brightness Adjustment, camera auto-exposure, eye protection mode trigger, some app brightness adaptation (e.g., reading apps).

Gyroscope

Measures angular acceleration, accurately captures device rotation / tilt actions.

Mobile games (e.g., steering control in racing games), VR/AR scene interaction, video stabilization (EIS), Navigation Direction Correction.

Electronic Compass (Geomagnetic Sensor)

Perceives the Earth’s magnetic field to determine direction (north, south, east, west).

Map Navigation (direction positioning), Compass app, outdoor adventure positioning, AR real-world navigation (e.g., walking navigation arrows).

Distance Sensor

Detects the distance between an object and the phone (short distance).

During calls, screen off to prevent accidental touches, phone unlocking (e.g., infrared distance assistance for facial recognition), some gesture operations (e.g., air swipe).

Facial Recognition Sensor (Infrared / 3D)

Collects facial feature information for identity verification.

Facial Unlock, Facial Payment, secure app login, privacy protection (e.g., facial authorization to view albums).

Flicker Sensor

Detects flicker of the screen and ambient light to optimize display effects and eye protection mode.

Photography: Eliminates “water ripple” and stripes caused by artificial light sources (e.g., LED lights, fluorescent lights).

Video Recording: Provides precise exposure time and white balance calibration to ensure smooth and clear dynamic images.

X-axis Linear Motor

Provides haptic feedback (e.g., gaming vibrations, typing feedback).

Gaming, input methods, system interactions, notification reminders.

Infrared Sensor

Emits / receives infrared signals for short-range data transmission or detection.

Infrared Remote Control (controlling home appliances), facial recognition assistance (nighttime lighting / distance detection), temperature measurement function in some models.

Hall Sensor

Perceives changes in the magnetic field to detect proximity to magnetic objects.

Wireless Charging, phone stand automatic wake/sleep, flip cover protection screen off / on.

Laser Focus Sensor

Emits laser to measure the distance to the subject, assisting in focusing.

Camera Quick Focus, low-light environment focus optimization, precise tracking focus when shooting moving objects, macro shooting focus assistance.

Multispectral Sensor

Detects environmental spectral information (including color temperature, light wave bands).

Camera white balance calibration (restoring true colors), HDR shooting optimization, color accuracy enhancement, skin tone optimization in some models.

Heart Rate Sensor (Optical)

Detects user heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, and other physiological data.

Health and Fitness Apps (heart rate monitoring), blood oxygen detection, sleep quality analysis, stress monitoring (supported by some models).

Temperature Sensor

Detects the temperature of the phone body and the environment.

Battery Overheat Protection (limits charging / performance at high temperatures), environmental temperature display, temperature adjustment during camera shooting.

Humidity Sensor

Detects environmental humidity.

Weather apps humidity data collection, some smart home interactions (e.g., controlling humidifiers based on humidity information sent from the phone).

Pressure Sensor

Measures atmospheric pressure, indirectly calculates altitude.

Weather apps pressure / altitude display, weather forecasting (predicting rain based on pressure changes), mountain climbing activity data recording, navigation assistance.

A total of 19 types of sensors have been listed.

This covers most types currently found in mobile phones.

I hope this is somewhat useful to everyone.
