Fault Case
Model: Kia K5
Mileage: 69032 KM
Engine: 2.0 NU engine
Fault Phenomenon: Engine fault light on the dashboard, lack of acceleration!
Fault Causes
1: Fuel system failure
2: Ignition failure
3: Engine ECU failure
4: Mechanical failure
5: A sensor failure
Diagnosis and Exclusion
1: Use GDS diagnostic tool to enter the engine system, read the fault code: P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor A (Intake) Circuit Fault (Bank 1 or single sensor)

2: According to the fault definition: Intake camshaft position sensor fault or circuit fault, check the camshaft position sensor power supply, ground, signal, measure power supply at 5V, ground at 0V, signal can vary

After measuring with a multimeter, the power supply, ground, and signal can change normally, suspect camshaft signal tooth failure, use an oscilloscope for measurement

Using an oscilloscope to measure the waveforms of the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors, the camshaft position sensor waveform is normal and in the correct position, indicating that the internal camshaft signal teeth are also normal, the crankshaft position sensor waveform is normal, and waveform analysis shows no timing jump fault!
3: Using the GDS diagnostic tool to read the data stream of the intake camshaft, it was found that the target position and actual position of the intake camshaft could not change normally, while the actual position and target of the exhaust camshaft could change normally, now the fault range can be locked to VVT valve failure and mechanical failure as well as VVT valve circuit fault (data stream video below)
Use a multimeter to measure the VVT valve circuit diagram

Measure power supply at 12V

Control signal at 3V

Remove the VVT solenoid valve for inspection, no sticking or dirt, measure the solenoid valve resistance within the normal range
4: Based on the above tests, the camshaft signal is normal and the circuit is normal, reading the data stream found that the intake VVT position cannot change according to the engine’s demand value, measuring the VVT solenoid valve signal and power supply is normal, locking the fault to a damaged engine control board, replaced and the fault was eliminated!
