Design Background
“Finding “lightness” in “heaviness”
Today’s smartwatches seem to be trapped in a strange cycle of “more functions, heavier weight”: to accommodate long-lasting batteries and multiple sensors, the thickness of the watch is considerable, and the “weight feeling” when worn deters many users; at the same time, the uniform square or round appearance has also made the product lose its unique identity.
The 101 design team found in their research that the vast majority of users believe that “wearing comfort” is the core demand of smartwatches, while “lightness” is the basis for comfort; at the same time, the younger generation expects products to combine “minimalist quality” with “personalized details”. Thus, “to create a smartwatch that feels ‘as light as not wearing one’, yet can carry core functions” became the starting point of this design.
Design Concept
“Wisdom in “subtraction”
1. Ultra-thin body: Technology makes “lightness” possible
The team first performed “subtraction” structurally: by customizing micro-sensors and optimizing battery layout, the thickness of the watch was compressed; at the same time, high-strength lightweight materials were used to keep the overall weight light, achieving a “weightless wearing experience”.
However, “lightness” does not mean “function reduction”—— core functions (heart rate monitoring, message notifications, exercise tracking) are fully retained, and even an “integrated charging dock design” was added: the watch base not only serves as a charger but also seamlessly attaches to the watch via magnets, acting as both a storage box and a desktop decoration, transforming “charging” from a “necessary action” into a “aesthetic scene”.
2. Adaptive design: Making “one watch” adaptable to “all wrists”
