Introduction
Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) were born in the 1940s and have developed many different types since commercialization in the 1950s over the past seventy years. Various PCBs exhibit their characteristics due to differences in substrate materials, number of conductive layers, and structures for different electronic device applications. To better differentiate them, classification naming is necessary.
The classification methods for PCBs generally include three types: classification by purpose, classification by substrate material, and classification by structure.
01
Classification by Purpose
Classification by purpose refers to the electronic device or apparatus the PCB is used for, such as radio boards, television boards, computer boards, mobile phone boards, automotive boards, etc. Every time a new electronic device is created, a new PCB will emerge. Nowadays, electronic devices, even electrical appliances, are equipped with PCBs, making the variety of PCBs named after application devices endless and difficult to count. The types of PCBs classified by purpose range from broad categories to specific devices, as shown in Figure 1.

Types of Printed Circuit Boards

Previously, PCBs were classified into several major categories such as civilian (consumer) PCBs, industrial (equipment) PCBs, and military PCBs. However, contemporary electronic devices are much more complex than before, and one device can be applied in multiple fields; thus, it is challenging to classify them by purpose. For example, a mobile phone is both a personal item and a business communication tool; a car can be a private vehicle, a government vehicle, or a military vehicle. Similar products have different purposes, so the classification in Figure 1 is relatively rough, with many overlaps.
Although classifying PCBs by purpose can clearly and intuitively show the product’s use, the complex electronic devices today require multiple different types of PCBs. For instance, automotive PCBs can include rigid boards, flexible boards, single-sided boards, and multilayer boards. If we only refer to them as “automotive PCBs,” it does not convey the performance level of the PCB. Classification by purpose can provide a general understanding of the reliability levels required for PCBs.
