Market Update: MediaTek Tops Q1 Smartphone SoC Shipment Data

According to the data released by the research firm CINNO Research regarding the shipment volume of smartphone SoCs in mainland China for the first quarter of 2022, the total shipment volume was approximately 74.39 million units, a decrease of 14.4% compared to the same period last year.

While Qualcomm is often perceived as the market leader, the true top player is MediaTek. In the first quarter of 2022, MediaTek held approximately 41.2% of the market share in China’s smartphone SoC market, an increase of 7% compared to the same period last year, while Qualcomm accounted for 35.9%, ranking second. This means that out of every 10 smartphones sold, 4 are equipped with MediaTek chips.

Apple and HiSilicon saw significant declines in shipments, with Apple experiencing a drop due to the previous quarter coinciding with the new iPhone release, resulting in a high shipment base. As for HiSilicon, the reasons are well-known. Overall, MediaTek performed the strongest, with both year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter growth.

According to the data for this year, the smartphone shipment volume in March was 20.04 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 24.7% and a month-on-month decrease of 14.6%, indicating a continuous decline in smartphone SoC sales.

From the actual market situation, no new devices equipped with Dimensity chips were released in the first quarter of 2022, with only the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 struggling alone, leading to low enthusiasm for purchasing new devices, with many feeling disheartened. In the second quarter, new devices featuring the Dimensity 8100/9000 were released one after another, receiving positive market feedback, while the TSMC version of the 8 Gen 1 has yet to arrive. The second quarter is expected to be MediaTek’s domain.
