This article mainly introduces the FMC interface of Xilinx FPGA.
The FMC stands for FPGA Mezzanine Card for Xilinx FPGA.FMC consists of two main parts: the processing engine (carrier card) and the I/O engine (FMC module). The carrier card and module are connected via connectors (from Samtec), with the connectors on the carrier card typically using female connectors and the connectors on the module using male connectors. Designers can reuse a single carrier card (including one or more FPGAs and an appropriate number and type of FMC connectors and boards) as a basis for various markets and applications. At the same time, with the newer FPGA products that have higher performance and more features, designers can easily upgrade to new carrier cards while ensuring full compatibility with existing FMC modules.

The FMC standard defines two sizes: single-width (69mm*76.5mm) and double-width (139mm*76.5mm). Single-width modules support a single connector to the carrier card. Double-width modules are primarily aimed at applications requiring higher bandwidth, larger front panel space, or larger PCB area, supporting up to two connectors. The FMC standard provides two sizes, allowing for more flexible optimization of the board based on space, I/O requirements, or both.After selecting the size, board designers must choose between two different connectors to serve as the interface from the FMC standard to the FPGA on the carrier card: one is the Low Pin Count (LPC) connector with 160 pins, and the other is the High Pin Count (HPC) connector with 400 pins. Both connectors support single-ended and differential signal transmission rates of up to 2Gb/s, with signal transmission rates to the FPGA serial connector reaching up to 10Gb/s.In addition to 68 user-defined single-ended signals or 34 user-defined differential pairs, the LPC connector also provides one pair of serial transceivers, a clock, a JTAG interface, and one optional I2C interface that can be used as a base Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI). The HPC connector, on the other hand, provides 160 user-defined single-ended signals or 80 user-defined differential pairs, 10 pairs of serial transceivers, and more clocks.Both HPC and LPC connectors use the same mechanical connectors, with the only difference being which signals are actually migrated. Therefore, a card using the LPC connector can also be inserted into the HPC slot, and with appropriate design, HPC cards can also provide many derived functions when inserted into LPC slots.Detailed specifications can be referenced in the relevant standards:
