Relevant statistics indicate that in 2024, Infineon will maintain its position as the world’s largest automotive semiconductor supplier, with a market share of 13.5%; among them, Infineon’s automotive MCU market share will reach as high as 32% in 2024.Infineon Technologies Vice President and Head of Automotive Power and New Energy Systems Business Unit for Greater China, Zhong Xiaolong, stated: “In fiscal year 2024, Infineon delivered over 9.4 billion automotive electronic components, serving approximately 3000 customers globally. For many years, Infineon has provided a variety of product combinations in the automotive MCU field, including “AURIX™ + TRAVEO™ + PSoC™” to meet different market demands. Among them, TriCore™ is Infineon’s self-developed architecture, the first unified, single-core, 32-bit microcontroller DSP architecture optimized for real-time embedded systems, combining the real-time functionality of MCUs, the computational power of DSPs, and the high-performance/cost characteristics of RISC load-store architecture into a compact, reprogrammable core.Infineon Technologies Automotive Business Senior Marketing Manager Liu Lin introduced that the AURIX™ series MCUs based on the TriCore™ core architecture almost cover all mainstream automotive application scenarios, including main drive, onboard power supply, BMS (Battery Management System), SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) domain control, ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), radar, motion control, chassis control, etc., and meet the high requirements for functional safety and information security in these scenarios.Currently, the Infineon AURIX™ series MCUs include AURIX™ TC2xx, TC3xx, and TC4xx series.Liu Lin stated: “The widely used AURIX™ TC3xx series in the market is a very successful generation of products for Infineon, and there will still be new product expansions and continuations—currently, the AURIX™ TC3xx series mainly adopts the TriCore™ 1.62 core, with a main frequency of 300 MHz, and can accommodate up to six processor cores.”Infineon plans to offer a 400 MHz upgrade option for some TC3xx products starting in 2026, including TC39x (16 MB storage capacity) and TC38x (10 MB storage capacity). The expanded products will provide samples to customers in early 2026 and quickly enter mass production. At the same time, Infineon will also consider upgrading TC377 to 400 MHz and evaluate whether to upgrade more AURIX™ TC3xx series MCUs to a 400 MHz main frequency based on market feedback and customer demand.AURIX™ TC4xx series is a new product launched by Infineon at the 2024 IACE (Infineon Automotive Innovation Summit). This series of MCUs is built on the new generation TriCore™ 1.8 core and an expandable accelerator suite (including new parallel processing units (PPUs) and multiple intelligent accelerators), with a main frequency increased to 500 MHz, supporting high-speed communication interfaces (such as 5G Ethernet and PCIe) as well as new interfaces that comply with the 10BASE-T1S standard, meeting the highest levels of functional safety and information security standards. Liu Lin pointed out that the AURIX™ TC4xx series and the previous generation AURIX™ TC3xx series have good intergenerational synergy, with strong similarities in architecture, and good inheritance in hardware and software design, with highly reusable peripheral resources.

Defining RISC-V as the Next-Generation Architecture

In terms of market share, Infineon has achieved a 32% market share in the global automotive MCU market, creating a significant gap with the second and third places. After in-depth discussions with OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers, Infineon has chosen RISC-V as the core architecture for the next generation of automotive MCUs. Liu Lin summarized the following important reasons:

  • As an open standard, RISC-V can accelerate hardware development and speed up product iteration;
  • The RISC-V reduced instruction set can provide a foundation for software development and innovation;
  • The modular design and scalability of RISC-V can better meet the development trends of SDV (Software Defined Vehicle).

“We hope to use RISC-V as a unified core architecture in the future, allowing all application requirements to be realized on a series of MCUs. In other words, Infineon’s next-generation AURIX™ series microcontroller products based on the RISC-V architecture are designed to meet the design and development needs of all automotive application scenarios. Based on existing product lines such as PSoC™, TRAVEO™, and AURIX™, we aim to provide customers with more choices.”She further stated.Currently, Infineon is actively promoting the development of RISC-V architecture automotive-grade MCUs while continuing to adopt the strategy of “ecology first, co-building ecology” in this field. “Ecology first” means that before the chip is released, Infineon invests a lot of effort in building the ecosystem; “co-building ecology” relies on the openness of RISC-V, and Infineon hopes to grow together with ecosystem partners to facilitate the implementation of RISC-V in the automotive industry. In the actual process of ecosystem building, Infineon will leverage its joint venture Quintauris to promote the standardization of RISC-V in instruction set architecture, profiles, and platforms. On this basis, the entire ecosystem’s partners (including toolchain or software partners) can build corresponding tools and software based on Infineon’s RISC-V platform, combined with chips and upper-layer applications, to form a complete ecosystem.It is understood that Infineon has already positioned the first virtual prototype machine based on the company’s automotive RISC-V architecture for ecosystem system partners. This is a virtual development kit that ecosystem system partners can use to adapt and develop in advance. In addition, Infineon is working with ecosystem system partners to integrate expertise in automotive microcontroller, toolchain, and basic software development to actively develop the automotive RISC-V ecosystem and create value for the RISC-V community.
