Revealing the Use of Metal 3D Printing in the Great Wall Anniversary Platform

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s Anti-Japanese War and the World Anti-Fascist War, the temporary viewing platform arranged in a “crowd” shape, featuring rich gold, wall red, and olive green colors, is spectacular, with nearly 50,000 seats for the audience to experience the grandeur on-site. The 14-meter high Great Wall Anniversary Platform is magnificent and symmetrical in design, resembling two towering gates, and has become a popular photo backdrop.

The Great Wall Anniversary Platform consists of four main elements: the base, the Great Wall platform, the anniversary characters, and the peace dove. The complex shape of the upper part of the main structure, which is an irregular steel truss, must overcome the limitations of night construction to achieveover 700 tons of steel structure assembly without errors, undoubtedly a tough battle.

Under the night sky, the construction team is assembling the anniversary platform.

“Break the ‘hard nut’ into small pieces to chew.” Zhang Jinxun, deputy general manager and technical expert of Beijing Urban Construction Group, serves as the project’s on-site commander. He stated that after multiple simulations and calculations by the team, breaking down this irregular truss into22 independent hoisting units was the most reasonable approach, meeting transportation size requirements while saving manpower and resources.

This is like dividing a large puzzle into22 pieces, each marked withover 400 positioning points. The positioning points serve as the “identity card” for the truss installation. The project team simulated the assembly process more than20 times, allowing workers to ensure precise alignment between the units and the base by targeting the marked points.

The application of new technology has made the anniversary platform more technologically advanced. To find an industrial manufacturing solution for the curtain wall that ensures stable color presentation and is unaffected by natural environmental factors, the project team underwent two months of continuous exploration and research, ultimately achievingthe first application of UV printing technology in building curtain walls, solving the issues of uncontrollable production cycles and presentation effects associated with traditional manual spraying methods. Project leader Gao Shudong stated that this technology is the first of its kind applied to aluminum panels for curtain walls, and the produced gradient color outer curtain wall of the anniversary platform can withstand the long rainy season.

The design verification phase of the anniversary platform required the production of a 1:30 scale model. The Beijing-based Jingcheng Additive Company utilized metal3D printing technology, working continuously for9 days and nights to complete the first version of the model.

“Complex structures can be formed integrally, and modifications can be quickly iterated.” Pang Ruifeng, general manager of Jingcheng Additive, said this is the first time that large-scale metal3D printing technology has been systematically applied in the preliminary model verification phase of a national-level commemorative event building.

High-precision metal models, scaled down proportionally, provide an extremely intuitive visual and tactile experience, allowing for the early detection and optimization of design details that are difficult to perceive in the drawings, significantly reducing risks and costs during the actual construction phase.
