First, let’s understand the three aspects of phone memory.
Today’s smartphones are similar to computers; they also have memory and storage, just like a computer has RAM and a hard drive. If we compare the memory inside your phone to a room, this room consists of three parts:
RAM:Random Access Memory (equivalent to a computer’s RAM)
ROM:Read-Only Memory (the storage space of your phone, equivalent to a computer’s hard drive)
SD Card:External expanded storage (equivalent to an external hard drive)
Why Does Your Phone Show “Insufficient Memory”?
The memory is the space that the phone’s system comes with by default. Since the operating system and other default programs are pre-installed at the factory, there isn’t much space left. Additionally, when you download apps, they are typically stored in the phone’s internal memory rather than on the SD card, which many users tend to overlook!
Moreover, many users sometimes make a small mistake when checking their phone’s storage space by confusing the SD card capacity with the memory capacity. You might wonder why you still have plenty of memory, yet it’s still insufficient! In fact, memory and storage are different, so don’t get them mixed up.
When the memory in this “room” becomes too crowded, it leaves insufficient space for the phone’s brain—the CPU—to manage various processes, which can lead to sluggish operation, application errors, slow internet speed, and more.
How to Solve the “Insufficient Memory” Issue?
Regularly Manage Background Apps
If too many programs are running simultaneously, the phone’s memory “room” can become overcrowded. It’s important to note that some programs continue to run in the background even after you exit them, consuming space. You can use phone management software to regularly clear cache and background processes to “lighten the load” on your phone.
Use a Relatively Simple Desktop Theme
Many users prefer flashy dynamic desktop themes, but these themes occupy a lot of space and are stored in the internal memory. Thus, using smaller, simpler themes can effectively reduce memory usage.
Transfer Apps to the SD Card
Install apps on the SD card, so they won’t take up space in the phone’s memory. Apps already installed in the internal memory can be moved to the SD card through the phone’s application management. Additionally, large files like photos and videos should also be stored on the SD card whenever possible.
Use RE File Explorer
If you have good hands-on skills, you can download the RE File Explorer. The /data/dalvik-cache folder contains system cache files and junk left behind by uninstalled custom programs, which can be safely deleted. After deletion, you will notice a significant improvement in system memory.
Restore Factory Settings
If your phone continuously prompts insufficient memory at startup, and uninstalling or moving apps doesn’t solve the issue, it may be due to malicious software. Users can back up their contacts, messages, and certain apps, then restore the phone to factory settings to completely resolve the issue.
