Technological Breakthroughs

Breaking into the Global Market from a “Small Room”

Over a decade ago, the consumer 3D printing market was a “private territory” of European and American brands, with equipment prices reaching 30,000 to 40,000 yuan, complex operations, and difficult popularization, making the dream of “bringing 3D printers into every household” seem unattainable.

The turning point began with a group of entrepreneurs in Shenzhen tackling technical challenges in a small space.

In 2014, Chen Chun and three other “post-80s” individuals pooled 300,000 yuan to rent a 20-square-meter office in Shenzhen to establish Chuangxiang Sanwei. They focused on the direction of “affordability,” and after their first product, the CR-i3, opened up the Hong Kong market, they launched the CR-10 printer in 2016, which quickly sold globally at a price of $500, with shipments exceeding 10,000 units, directly driving the company’s performance growth by nearly ten times the following year. In August of this year, Chuangxiang Sanwei submitted its listing application to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, aiming to become the first stock in consumer-level 3D printing.

Similar stories are frequently seen in Shenzhen. Intelligent派, founded in 2015, initially focused on STEM education kits, later entering the sub-sector of control boards and screens for reusable 3D printer kits, achieving sales exceeding 1 billion yuan from 2023. Zongwei Likuang, which entered the market in 2016, broke the high-price barrier with its first Photon series light-curing printer, with cumulative sales exceeding one million units by 2024, covering over 200 countries and regions.

The most “dark horse” quality belongs to TuoZhu Technology, which launched the Bambu Lab X1 printer in 2022, achieving industrial-level performance at consumer-level prices, raising $7 million in crowdfunding, breaking the record for the highest crowdfunding amount in history.

These companies, starting from “small rooms,” have used technological innovation to break through the monopoly of European and American brands. They are not satisfied with simple imitation but have optimized algorithms, improved material compatibility, and simplified operational processes, transforming 3D printers from “professional equipment” into “consumer products.” This path of reducing costs through technology and winning markets through performance has not only brought “expensive equipment” into ordinary consumer scenarios but has also established Shenzhen’s first-mover advantage in the global consumer 3D printing field.

Full Chain Collaboration

Building the Foundation for “One Printer Every Two Minutes”

The breakthroughs of individual enterprises are just the starting point. The core competitiveness of Shenzhen’s 3D printing industry comes from building an ecosystem that transitions from “single-point innovation” to “full-chain collaboration,” making efficient production and rapid iteration possible.

TuoZhu’s self-developed laser radar sensor collaborates with 40 supporting enterprises in Shenzhen to create an ecosystem of “hardware delivered the same day.” Design drawings can be completed in the morning, and samples can be delivered to the production line in the afternoon. With this support, TuoZhu’s flagship machine, the X1, sweeps the global market with a printing speed five times the industry average, aiming to top the global sales chart in 2024.

  • On the materials side, companies like Weishitai and Guanghua Weiye provide core consumable support;

  • On the equipment side, TuoZhu Technology and Chuangxiang Sanwei dominate the consumer market, while listed companies like Dazhu Laser tackle industrial-grade equipment, with their self-developed SLM metal 3D printers improving efficiency by over 50%.

  • On the application side, companies like Guangyunda and Yishangzhanshi promote the application of 3D printing in medical, cultural, and electronic fields.

Today, Shenzhen has formed a complete 3D printing industrial chain covering modeling systems, materials, equipment, and application services.

“Relying on Shenzhen’s industrial cluster advantages, enterprises achieve full self-control from components to finished products, assembling a 3D printer every two minutes, with a maximum daily capacity of nearly 12,000 units,” said Chen Bo, deputy general manager of Intelligent派. This efficiency not only allows for rapid response to overseas orders but also supports rapid product iteration.

The entry of listed companies has further strengthened the industrial power. Anker Innovations launched its first UV printer, eufyMakeE1, on Kickstarter in 2024, raising over $10 million in 12 hours; companies like Jiguang Innovation and Dazhu Laser leverage capital and channel advantages to fill the gaps between industrial and consumer markets. With the combined efforts, Shenzhen’s 3D printing industry has broken free from the limitations of “going it alone.” In the first half of this year, the production of high-tech products in Shenzhen continued to grow rapidly, with the output of 3D printing equipment products increasing by 35.8%.

Leading the World

“Shenzhen Manufacturing” Reshapes Industry Rules

With technological and industrial chain advantages, Shenzhen enterprises have captured the world with precise globalization strategies, not only securing over 90% of the global entry-level 3D printer shipment volume but also transforming from “price followers” to “standard setters.”

The data is the most convincing. The Q1 2025 report from CONTEXT shows that global shipments of entry-level 3D printers exceeded 1 million units, with Chinese suppliers accounting for 95%.

Behind the impressive results is the differentiated overseas strategy of Shenzhen enterprises. TuoZhu Technology bypassed traditional platforms, building the “MakerWorld” community centered on independent sites, mastering traffic through content marketing. Zongwei Likuang also launched an independent site, which, along with Amazon, supports over 55% of the company’s sales. Intelligent派 connects directly with consumers through its self-operated DTC platform, quickly responding to market changes. Chuangxiang Sanwei collaborates with over 2,300 KOLs (Key Opinion Leaders) to deeply cultivate localized markets. This approach of “not clustering, but focusing on precision” has allowed Shenzhen brands to quickly establish recognition in overseas markets.

Today, Shenzhen enterprises no longer rely on the “cost-performance” label but reshape industry standards through technological innovation. TuoZhu’s Bambu Lab X1 redefines the speed and intelligence of desktop devices. Zongwei Likuang’s Photon series promotes the popularization of light-curing printers. Chuangxiang Sanwei has become the only company globally to provide consumer-level 3D printers, 3D scanners, and laser engraving machines simultaneously, with its consumer-level 3D scanner holding the largest market share worldwide. “Shenzhen Manufacturing” is rewriting and reshaping the rules of precision and operational standards in the 3D printer industry.

From “following” to “leading,” Shenzhen’s consumer-level 3D printing has rapidly occupied the technological high ground, taking control of the market, serving as a strong testament to the combined effects of Shenzhen’s industrial chain advantages, talent reserves, and entrepreneurial ecosystem. Currently, the global 3D printing market is expanding at a rate of 20% per year, with a projected scale of over $50 billion by 2028. In this race, Shenzhen has already gained the upper hand.
