Global semiconductor solution provider Renesas Electronics (TSE: 6723) has announced the launch of a new RX product – RX23E-B, expanding its 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) product line aimed at high-end industrial sensor systems. As a member of the widely popular RX product family, the new product features a high-precision analog front end (AFE) designed for systems that require fast and accurate analog signal measurements.

The new MCU integrates a 24-bit Delta-Sigma A/D converter with a conversion speed of up to 125 kSPS (125,000 samples per second), which is eight times faster than the existing RX23E-A product. Compared to RX23E-A, it can perform precise A/D conversions while reducing the root mean square (RMS) noise to one-third (0.18µVrms @1kSPS). The RX23E-B is capable of measuring key parameters such as strain, temperature, pressure, flow rate, current, and voltage more quickly and accurately, making it an ideal choice for high-end sensor devices, measuring instruments, and testing equipment. Notably, the RX23E-B has sufficient performance to drive force-sensitive sensors used in industrial robots, which typically require measurements at a speed of 10 µsec (100,000 samples per second). This product also integrates the AFE and MCU into a single chip, thereby reducing the overall size of the system and minimizing the number of components.

Similar to the RX23E-A, the RX23E-B also integrates a CPU based on the 32MHz RXv2 core, equipped with digital signal processing (DSP) instructions and a floating-point unit (FPU), and uses the same manufacturing process to integrate the AFE into a single chip. It offers new peripheral features such as a 16-bit D/A converter for measurement adjustments, self-diagnostics, and analog signal output. The product’s +/-10V analog input can perform +/-10V measurements using a 5V power supply without the need for external components or additional power supplies. Additionally, it includes an LCD controller that supports a maximum of 40 SEG x 4 COM and real-time clock (RTC) functionality.
Large instruments that need to control and measure multiple targets (such as robotic arms, gas, and liquid analyzers) have a significant demand for distributed processing architectures. In distributed processing designs, each function can operate as a separate module, responsible for tasks such as motor control, sensor measurement, and temperature control, rather than relying on a dedicated MCU to manage all functions. This modular approach allows for independent development, thus achieving greater design flexibility and simplifying maintenance. Since each module requires an MCU for computation, engineers can more easily develop sensor modules using MCUs with built-in AFE, rather than combining discrete AFE chips with separate MCUs.
The RX23E-B offers versions supporting A/D data conversion rates of up to 125 kSPS and 31.25 kSPS. Both products provide flexible data rate settings from 3.8 SPS to the maximum supported value, allowing users to choose the best balance between data rate and noise according to their specific system requirements. Both products support a compact 100-pin BGA package measuring 5.5mm square and a 40-pin QFN package measuring 6mm square, suitable for compact applications, and also offer wide pin packages from 48 pins to 100 pins.

Renesas combines the newly designed RX23E-B MCU for precise pressure measurement and control with intelligent power devices responsible for driving solenoid valves to develop high-speed pressure control systems. The integrated high-precision AFE enables accurate pressure control while minimizing the number of components in the design, thereby reducing BOM costs and circuit board footprint. These “successful product combinations” are based on mutually compatible and seamlessly collaborating devices, featuring a technically validated system architecture that delivers optimized low-risk designs to accelerate time-to-market.
