A low-cost 8 x 8 infrared sensor designed by a prominent figure in the school, who has been working on MEMS devices for many years. Recently, he started a company, and after half a year, the samples are finally available for me to play with:




The VMT-88 belongs to the THERMOChip™ series, which is an 8×8 infrared thermal sensing pixel array module.
Main function: Capture infrared radiation signals in a specified area → Convert to electrical signals → Output high-sensitivity digital signals.
Application value: Achieve pixel-level intelligent thermal sensing for low-resolution thermal imaging in consumer and industrial scenarios.
Core Features
Pixel Array: 8×8 (64 points), low cost but with basic thermal imaging capabilities.
Power Supply: 5 V, typical current approximately 4.2 mA.
Output: Factory calibrated, digital signal output.
Interface: USART serial communication.
FOV (Field of View): 58° × 58°.
Frame Rate: 1–5 Hz, low-speed refresh, suitable for detection applications rather than dynamic imaging.
Temperature Range:
Operating temperature: -20 ℃ ~ 85 ℃
Target object: -20 ℃ ~ 150 ℃
Detection Distance: ≤ 7 m.
Currently, it is made into such a small module that can be directly connected via serial port. In the future, sensors will also be sold directly, allowing customers to design the subsequent parts themselves.
