Chinese Academy of Sciences: Second Generation Open Source CPU Core to Use 14nm Process

AbstractRecently, Bao Yungang, Deputy Director of the Institute of Computing Technology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a member of the RISC-V International Foundation Board, revealed that the RISC-V open-source processor “Xiangshan” has a new affiliation—the Beijing Open Source Chip Research Institute (Open Chip Institute).

Regarding the “Xiangshan” and “One Life, One Chip” project, chip master has previously detailed the first batch of graduates from the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ “One Life, One Chip” program, which had an annual salary of 350,000!

Bao Yungang stated that after four months of preparation, the first batch of new projects centered around “Xiangshan” has officially launched, and other open-source chip projects will be gradually initiated.

It is reported that the first generation core of “Xiangshan”, named “Yanqi Lake”, has already been taped out in July 2021, based on 28nm technology, with a die area of 6.6 square millimeters, a single-core L2 cache of 1MB, and an expected power consumption of 5W. The second generation core “Nanhu” aims for 14nm at 2GHz.

In terms of performance, the SPEC CPU2006 score of “Yanqi Lake” is expected to be around [email protected], which is approximately 7/GHz, roughly equivalent to the level of ARM A72/A73, whose commercial representatives include Snapdragon 835, Kirin 960/970, etc.

Meanwhile, the second generation microarchitecture “Nanhu” is expected to achieve a SPEC 2006 score of around 20 after process and frequency upgrades. Interestingly, the name of the second generation architecture comes from Jiaxing Nanhu, the site of the first National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the birthplace of the Chinese Communist Party.

It is understood that at the sixteenth “China Chip” Integrated Circuit Industry Promotion Conference held last December, Chinese Academy of Engineering academician Ni Guangnan pointed out that the CPU market is currently mainly dominated by x86 and Arm architectures, and that China aims to break this situation. The open-source RISC-V architecture will be a significant opportunity and development direction for achieving autonomy and control.

In the future mainstream CPU architecture landscape, the RISC-V architecture is expected to achieve one-third of the market share.
