According to reports, Loongson Technology’s9A1000graphics card began development in2023, and the development work has now been completed, with tape-out scheduled for the third quarter of this year.
9A1000 is Loongson’s first graphics card, marking an important milestone for this Chinese manufacturer, which has previously focused primarily on processors (CPU). The company positions the9A1000 as an entry-level graphics card that supportsAI acceleration. Therefore, it does not compete in the same market segment as another Chinese graphics card, theG100, which is said to rival the NVIDIAGeForce RTX 4060.
Loongson has kept details under wraps, only hinting that its performance is similar to that of theRadeon RX 550 released eight years ago.
The latest news about the9A1000 indicates that Loongson has reduced the area of eachGPU basic computing unit by20%. The manufacturer also claims to have increased the operating frequency of the9A1000 by25%, while achieving a power optimization of70% in light-load scenarios. In terms of functionality, the9A1000 is compatible withOpenGL 4.0 andOpenCL ES 3.2 API.
According to Loongson, the9A1000 can outperform the integrated graphics of the2K3000 processor,LG200 by up to4 times. It also offers up to40 TOPS ofAI computing power, slightly lower than the50 TOPS provided by theAMD Ryzen AI Max+ (codenameStrix Halo) chip’sXDNA 2 NPU.
The9A1000 is not Loongson’s only graphics card project. The company is also developing the9A2000, which is said to be up to10 times faster than the9A1000 and can reach the level of theGeForce RTX 2080. Loongson also plans to launch the9A3000 as a successor to the9A2000, but currently, there is no specification information available.
Currently, many Chinese companies and startups have entered the graphics card industry. However, many of these companies ultimately fail and exit the market. Therefore, the news we hear often comes from a few more representative manufacturers, such as Birun, Moore Threads, and in recent years, Loongson and Lishan Technology.
