Tencent Digital News Many VR products on the market require a connection to a PC or smartphone, with truly standalone VR being rare. However, Allwinner’s new VR chipset may change this and reduce the high prices of VR. The Allwinner H8VR chipset allows VR to operate independently without connecting to a PC or smartphone, and it can also be integrated into Cardboard VR.

Allwinner’s H8VR chipset targets the low-end VR market, and Allwinner has consistently focused on the low-end smartphone and tablet market. This company has contributed to lowering the costs of mobile devices, and what has been achieved in smartphones can also be applied to VR with the Allwinner H8VR.
VR products like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive require substantial processing power and rely on smartphones or powerful PCs. Most top chip manufacturers have not developed dedicated processors for standalone VR or AR headsets. Microsoft’s AR glasses, Hololens, use Intel’s Cherry Trail processor, which is neither specifically designed for VR nor AR. NVIDIA and AMD’s VR strategies rely on their PC GPUs. On the other hand, Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 7 can serve as a counterpart to the Samsung Gear VR, as the Note 7 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, which is suitable for VR, significantly enhancing VR performance in areas such as audio enhancement and image scene recognition.
So, who between Allwinner and Qualcomm would be more willing to develop dedicated VR chips? If VR products sell well, creating dedicated VR chips may become a new option for chip manufacturers. Analysts predict that 9.6 million VR units will be successfully sold this year, and by 2020, this number may reach 64.8 million units. The Allwinner H8VR chipset features an octa-core ARM Cortex A7 processor, PowerVR SGX544 GPU, 16GB of storage, and 2GB of DDR3 memory. In fact, this product is like a VR version of the Allwinner H8.
It is worth noting that users should consider a smooth visual experience when purchasing low-end VR products to avoid feelings of dizziness or discomfort. The Allwinner H8VR clearly cannot match the image quality of the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, which rely on powerful PC GPUs. Users should carefully consider whether this is the VR product they need before making a purchase.
