The release of Mate10 marks the entry of the new generation Kirin chip into the mass production stage. The successful mass production of a chip is the result of the efforts of hundreds of engineers. A chip typically undergoes three key tape-out stages to achieve successful mass production. What are they? Let’s introduce them one by one.
multi-project wafer
As we all know, the mask cost for chips is very high. The initial tape-out of a new chip usually adopts the MPW method to reduce tape-out costs. The charging standard for MPW is based on window charges, with different process windows being 5*5, 3*4, 2*3, etc. The purpose of MPW tape-out is mainly to verify the main functions of the chip while supporting collaborative software design. If the chip has bugs, they can be corrected in the next stage or smoothed out using software.
pilot-product
The small batch pilot production stage allows for the production of 6-25 wafers. After completing the testing work for MPW chips and making necessary modifications, we proceed to Final tape-out. Entering this stage indicates that the chip’s functionality is nearly finalized. The main purpose of the Pilot stage is to evaluate the impact of normal process drift on chip performance. During the Pilot stage, different process options are typically selected, such as 3 pieces of SS, 3 pieces of TT, 3 pieces of FF, 3 pieces of SF, etc., to evaluate the chip’s performance against different processes, proving that our design margins are sufficient. Another main task at this stage is to solidify wafer testing and finished product testing to lay the foundation for subsequent mass production and delivery.
mass-product
Mass production stage. At this point, it indicates that the chip has been successfully produced, with no issues regarding functionality, performance, or process compatibility. What remains is to place orders, ship products, and collect payments, though the pressure for after-sales service will be considerable.

Reflection: The chip can be said to be the “baby” of IC engineers, and every stage of its growth is inseparable from the tireless efforts of IC engineers. Hereโs a shoutout to all IC engineers.
