In the previous two issues, our smart fish tank has achieved the following functions:

First Issue: Water Circulation and Oxygenation Function – A lazy tool? I used the Espressif ESP32-S3 development board to create a smart fish tank that can take care of itself! Low-cost and open source!

Second Issue: Water Quality Monitoring Function – With just one Espressif ESP32-S3 development board, I surprisingly achieved freedom in monitoring fish tank water quality at home?! Open source code!

This issue will focus on a key factor for plant growth – light, further developing the smart environmental light monitoring function.

Healthy plant growth relies on five essential elements: temperature, light, water, air, and nutrients. Light is the source of life for plants. However, unstable natural light and insufficient indoor lighting often restrict the growth of aquatic plants in the fish tank, necessitating artificial lighting. To achieve smart lighting, we must first accurately sense the intensity of the ambient light.

In this issue, we will guide you through the setup of the environmental light detection part. The project code is open source!

  • 15cm Dupont Wires

Hardware Connections

  • Connect D19 (SDA) of the development board to the SDA of the sensor

Sensor Data Acquisition

We read the BH1750 sensor data through the I2C communication protocol to obtain the current ambient light intensity value in real-time.

Thus, the environmental light monitoring function has been successfully implemented. The intelligence lies in the details; what seems like a simple function is the foundation of the smart lighting system.
