According to foreign media reports, Tesla CEO Elon Musk made bold predictions during a public event on Wednesday, stating that as AI develops, humans will no longer need to work or use money.
With the continuous advancement of artificial intelligence, future work will become an “optional” endeavor. Musk made this bold prediction when asked about concerns regarding employment prospects at the US-Saudi Investment Forum.
“Work will exist like sports or video games,” Musk explained, “just as you can go to the store to buy vegetables or grow them in your backyard.” He added, “Growing vegetables in your backyard is more challenging, but some people still enjoy it. Work will be similar—optional. However, from now until then, we have a lot of work to do.”
Musk also made a second bold prediction regarding the AI era: money will become irrelevant. “My speculation is that if the time frame is long enough—assuming that AI and robotics continue to advance (which seems likely)—money will eventually lose its significance at some point in the future,” he stated.
In contrast, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang took a more cautious view on the future of work, emphasizing the short-term impacts of technology. “There is no doubt that everyone’s work will change,” Huang stated, “the way students learn will change, and the way people work will obviously change—because many of the repetitive, arduous, or extremely difficult tasks we do daily will become extremely simple in the future. Therefore, at the productivity level, we will achieve a qualitative leap.”
It is worth mentioning that Musk is known for his tendency to make grand predictions, as he has publicly proposed and missed many project deadlines (such as fully autonomous driving cars, the Robotaxi product, and sending humans to Mars).
