Elon Musk: AI and Robotics May Render Money Irrelevant, Making Work Optional

According to Euronews, on Monday local time, Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared his vision for the future of artificial intelligence and robotics during a discussion with NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang at the MESA Investment Forum. He stated that the ongoing evolution of generative AI will gradually make money “lose its significance”. Although energy and quality, such as electricity, will still pose objective limitations, the importance of currency will ultimately diminish significantly.

When discussing the changing nature of work, Musk pointed out that future work will no longer be a necessity for survival, but will become an activity that can be “freely participated in”, similar to sports or games. He used gardening as an analogy: while growing vegetables in the backyard requires effort, those who love the activity will still engage voluntarily. Future work will also transform into this kind of “optional” choice.

Musk also mentioned the “Culture Series” by science fiction author Iain Banks, believing that these works help people understand a “more likely positive AI future”. In fact, over the past few months, he has repeatedly depicted the development landscape of the AI era, including the goal of eradicating poverty. Earlier this month, during a shareholder event, he emphasized that “the key path to achieving universal poverty alleviation and quality healthcare lies in the application of Optimus robots”.

In October of this year, Musk also stated during a conversation with Joe Rogan that when AI and robotics develop to the point where work and money are no longer necessities, the government should implement a “universal high-income” policy. He admitted that in a more moderate development scenario, the vision of everyone being able to access the products and services they need will gradually be realized, but this process will also come with a considerable degree of social upheaval.
