Commercial Trials to Drive Scale Effects in Satellite IoT and Promote Commercial Space Development

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has recently officially launched commercial trials for satellite IoT services, marking a new stage in China’s satellite communication industry. This trial is open to qualified enterprises, exploring satellite IoT services in accordance with laws and regulations, aiming to unleash the vitality of the private economy, promote the safe and orderly development of commercial space, and facilitate the deep integration of the real economy with the digital economy, thereby better serving the strategic goals of a manufacturing powerhouse, a space powerhouse, a cyber powerhouse, and a digital China.

As a key component of new infrastructure, satellite communication has developed rapidly in recent years. To date, China has successfully launched 13 groups of low Earth orbit satellite internet satellites and deployed 108 satellites in the Qianfan constellation, while the construction of private constellations is also accelerating, continuously speeding up the overall industrial process.

Satellite IoT aligns with the trend of “Internet of Everything,” utilizing satellite communication technology to connect massive devices for data collection and transmission. Unlike direct satellite connections for mobile phones, satellite IoT primarily provides services to “things,” but its applications have quietly integrated into daily life.

In specific application scenarios, satellite IoT demonstrates broad potential. With the increasing level of informationization and intelligence in vehicles, satellite IoT can provide intelligent networking support for vehicles, transmitting location and operational data to enhance driving intelligence and safety. The rise of the low-altitude economy means that drones rely on satellite IoT for precise positioning and control command transmission, potentially achieving more efficient delivery services in the future. For outdoor adventurers, in areas with weak communication coverage, satellite IoT can provide one-click alarm and rescue functions through dedicated terminals, ensuring personnel safety. Additionally, this technology is widely used in offshore fishing, energy and water conservancy, transportation logistics, and industrial internet sectors, greatly expanding the service boundaries of the IoT due to its extensive coverage advantages.

Although China’s satellite IoT is still in its infancy, the overall development trend is positive. The launch of commercial trials will bring multiple benefits to both the user side and the industry side. On the user side, the trials will promote satellite IoT to provide comprehensive information services for vehicles, ships, drones, etc., facilitating the integration of the real economy with the digital economy and accelerating the transformation towards intelligence and sustainability. Currently, technologies for direct satellite connections for mobile phones, vehicles, and drones are rapidly becoming popular, with satellite communication transitioning from specialized fields to the general public, expected to become a new economic growth point. Driven by policies, technology, and market forces, the satellite IoT industry is poised for significant opportunities. In the future, satellite IoT will deeply integrate with various industries, forming large-scale application scenarios. The accelerated development of low Earth orbit satellite IoT will also assist in achieving global service capabilities. In terms of standardization, the IoT NTN standards being developed by 3GPP will promote the integration of space and ground, enabling ubiquitous connectivity. Meanwhile, the deep integration of satellite IoT with artificial intelligence will give rise to new applications and business models, achieving a leap from “Internet of Everything” to “Intelligent Internet of Everything.”
