According to a recent news report from COMNEWS, the Russian Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart) has introduced Russia’s first standard for satellite Internet of Things (IoT). This standard has the status of a provisional national standard (PNST) and is valid for three years (until July 1, 2027). Experts believe that the introduction of this standard is a significant event for the industry.
The standard was developed by the “Radio Research Institute” (NIIR), which is under the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation. Its main goal is to provide technical recommendations for the coordinated development of network infrastructure architecture and physical environments to ensure IoT services based on low Earth orbit multi-satellite systems.
According to the NIIR press office, this standard applies to various documents in the field of satellite IoT (standards, technical specifications, technical or contractual documents, textbooks, and references, etc.). It is also applicable to research and production teams working in the field of IoT communication networks, dealing with the application and implementation of domestic satellite IoT devices/systems, as well as testing and inspection for the certification of satellite IoT devices/systems. The standard is a normative technical document; it does not establish requirements but provides recommendations. Considering the particularities of the IoT low Earth orbit satellite system architecture, these recommendations ensure compatibility between devices from Russian and foreign manufacturers.
