ARM Strikes Back: Capturing 25% of the Server CPU Market, x86 Beware!

On September 12, the latest news indicates that the competition between AMD and Intel is intensifying, but they have shown a united front in the face of ARM’s encroachment. Recent statements claim that x86 efficiency surpasses that of ARM. However, this does not alleviate the competitive pressure on both companies.

ARM processors are not only showing strong momentum on the PC platform but have also made significant progress in the high-end server market. According to a report by Dell’Oro analyst Baron Fung, ARM has captured 25% of the server CPU market in the second quarter, a significant increase compared to a year ago.

The growth of ARM’s market share is primarily driven by NVIDIA, whose Grace-Blackwell rack-level computing platform has performed exceptionally well. AMD and Intel did not anticipate that their long-standing battle would be disrupted by NVIDIA.

NVIDIA, which has excelled in the AI field, has made CPU selection (whether x86 or ARM) relatively less important due to the computational tasks completed by its GPUs. Although ARM’s expansion in the server CPU market has not reached its originally estimated pace, its lineup continues to grow. Not only NVIDIA, but also Amazon, Qualcomm, and others are actively developing their own ARM chips. In the future, major tech giants may all venture into this field.
