Should you install smart home devices during your home renovation? To be honest, I was hesitant at first, worried about the cost, the hassle, and the potential for one malfunction to affect everything else. However, over the past two years, I’ve seen several friends gradually add smart devices, and I’ve personally tried a few. I genuinely believe that some things, which seemed optional before installation, significantly enhance happiness once in place. Especially the following eight items, which are not too expensive but are incredibly convenient to use. I later discovered a gadget called a curtain companion, which clips directly onto the track and can be controlled via a smartphone or voice commands. The best part is that some models come with solar charging, requiring no maintenance for six months, making it worry-free. A friend who has it said it’s quite addictive, especially when the curtains automatically open in the morning, letting in sunlight, which instantly lifts your mood. The only downside is that it needs to be taken down occasionally for charging, but compared to the convenience it offers, that’s hardly a concern.

02 Smart Window Switch

In the past, I would rush home whenever it rained or was windy, fearing I might forget to close the windows. Now, in my new home, I’ve added a smart window opener. I can close the windows remotely via my phone, set a timer for automatic opening and closing, and some even sense rain and close themselves. It’s a must-have for lazy people, especially when no one is home, providing peace of mind.

Water leaks in the kitchen or bathroom can ruin your night’s sleep. I experienced this firsthand last year when the connection on my water purifier loosened. Luckily, I had installed a water leak alarm that woke me up in the middle of the night; otherwise, my floor would have been ruined. When it comes to safety, you should never skimp on a gas alarm. Honestly, the first time I saw this gadget, I thought it was a joke. Who would have thought a small mechanical hand could press switches? However, after using it, I realized it’s incredibly convenient for places where you can’t replace traditional switches with smart ones, like door access, toilets, and old-style sockets. When friends come over and can’t get in, I can press a button on my phone, and the robot helps me “press” the door open. It can also press elevator buttons and flush toilets, completely liberating lazy people. In fact, smart switches are now quite affordable, costing only a few dozen yuan, and they can be voice-controlled or automatically turn on lights when someone enters. Coming home at night, I no longer have to fumble in the dark for the switch, and the bathroom lights can turn off automatically when I leave. After using these for years, I truly feel that traditional switches are outdated.

08 Smart Door Lock

Lastly, I must mention door locks. Today’s smart door locks can use fingerprints, passwords, cards, or facial recognition—whatever works. Elderly and young children no longer have to worry about forgetting their keys; they can just press a button to unlock the door. Higher-end models can even display the time and weather, allowing you to glance at them when leaving in the morning, which is much more convenient than checking your phone. Sometimes, when relatives visit, I can unlock the door remotely, saving me from running up and down the stairs.

In fact, you don’t need to install smart devices throughout the entire house at once, nor do you need to go all out. With the items mentioned above, spending around five to six thousand yuan can provide basic safety and convenience, and they are all suitable for retrofitting. If your budget is limited, prioritize the door lock, gas alarm, and water leak sensor, and you can gradually add the rest later. After all, life is already exhausting enough; having a bit of technological assistance can truly make life much more comfortable.
