Hello everyone, I am Lao Zhou, an electrician with over ten years of experience. Recently, many colleagues have messaged me, and the most common question is about learning PLC: “Lao Zhou, how do I learn PLC?” “Is there a quick way to get started?” “Are there any shortcuts?” Every time I see these questions, I can empathize—after all, when I first encountered PLC, I was just as anxious.
🔧 Let me be clear: there is no shortcut to mastering PLC.
This might sound discouraging, but it is the hard truth I learned from my own experience. We electricians know that skills are developed through practice. The same goes for PLC; just memorizing theoretical knowledge is useless. Spending a day reading the manual is not as effective as programming once with your own hands. Back in the day, I practiced PLC programming after work, repeatedly adjusting the program on the equipment, correcting mistakes, and testing again. It took me about half a year to really get the hang of it.
💡 Today, let’s skip the theory and jump straight into 5 practical cases.
These cases are ones I frequently encounter in my work, not some flashy theoretical problems. For each case, I will clearly explain the requirements, then discuss how to analyze the problem using PLC thinking, and finally teach you the specific programming methods. Whether it’s ladder diagrams or logic languages, I will write it clearly so that even novice electricians can understand.
Some may ask, “Are these cases really useful?” Let me share a true story: one of my apprentices mastered these cases, and last month, the factory introduced a new production line. The boss asked the electricians to handle the programming and debugging, and while others were clueless, he stepped up, modified the program based on the case logic, and completed the debugging in half a day. The boss immediately gave him a raise of 500 yuan and praised him as “material for an advanced electrician.”

Learning PLC does require some effort, but it is not difficult. The key is to practice more and think deeply. You can save these 5 cases and practice on your computer after work. If you encounter problems, don’t rush; troubleshoot step by step. I came from being a novice who only knew how to connect wires to now being able to independently complete the programming of an entire automation system, all thanks to this spirit of inquiry.
