Jean-Philippe Duboscq
The Blue
Aluminium and wood frame,
linen and cotton canvas,
uncrushed natural pigments and black gesso
180 cm x150cm
This work uses complex materials: aluminium and wood frame, linen and cotton canvas, uncrushed natural pigments and black gesso—Duboscq’s work demonstrates a willingness to bring painting materials as close to their physical limits as possible, freeing them from the constraints of control and composition, allowing space for the unexpected. This is reflected in the smooth, transparent backgrounds formed by the flowing and absorbing pigments, as well as in his lively brushstrokes. Regular yet freely flowing. The way of nature.
Jean-Philippe Duboscq is a Belgian painter of French descent, born in 1960, currently residing in Brussels, Germany. He has a solid foundation in materials science, creating works using materials such as coarse linen, uncolored pigments, pumice, and sand. His canvas and pictorial structure appear torn, suspended, and flowing, presenting a sense of “disorder” in architecture, as well as a rhythmic freedom. Before focusing on painting, Duboscq was a contemporary music composer and performer, particularly sensitive to “rhythm, pause, and improvisation,” which is directly translated into the beats on the canvas.
