Matthew Marks Gallery
A large-scale sculpture of a Klein blue strawberry, reminiscent of the pure visual style of Katharina Fritsch, this artist acts like a magician filled with strange powers, enlarging ordinary animals or objects, making them unfamiliar and extraordinary. She believes, “Everything can become my sculpture. From the very beginning, I wanted to create an intermediate world, a truly surprising world, as if people had never seen these objects before.
Katharina Fritsch (born 1956 in Germany) is known as one of the most innovative sculptors of contemporary art. The Klein blue rooster sculpture is one of her iconic works. She draws inspiration from everyday life, such as household items, common insects and animals, body parts, etc., altering them through unexpected proportions and color changes to create sculptures that blur the boundaries between the ordinary and deep symbolism. These works metaphorically reflect varying degrees of human ancestral fears and superstitions, the mysterious nature of totemic thought, and Freudian dream studies.
