Head, 2022
Hand painted steel
89.9 × 64 cm
Steel sculpture <Head> is a representative work of Nigerian artist Victor Ekpuk, continuing his consistent use of the ancient Nigerian script Nsibidi as his abstract visual language. Inspired by the sacred writings of Nigeria, this script uses graphics, gestures, and objects to express thoughts, blurring the lines between art and text.
Victor Ekpuk (born 1964 in Nigeria) currently resides in Washington, USA. His paintings, drawings, and sculptures reinterpret ancient Nigerian communication systems, exploring the rich meanings encompassing historical narratives, contemporary African diaspora, and the connection between humanity and the sacred. In recent years, Ekpuk has begun to incorporate large murals, installation art, and public art projects into his portfolio, bringing his ancestors’ indigenous culture to the world stage.
