The Development Gap Among Four Graduates from Hunan University of Technology's Computer Science Program After Seven Years

Computer Science and Technology is one of the most cutting-edge fields today, encompassing various hot topics such as artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, blockchain, and cybersecurity. These technologies are profoundly changing the way we live and work.

The application of computer technology has permeated almost every industry, from the internet, finance, and healthcare to education, entertainment, and manufacturing. Regardless of which industry you are interested in, knowledge in computer science can open a door for you.

With the acceleration of digital transformation, the demand for computer science professionals continues to grow across various sectors. Whether in startups or large enterprises, there is a need for skilled professionals with computer skills to drive business development.

For this reason, the computer science major attracts a large number of students each year during the college entrance examination.

So, what is the real employment and salary situation for graduates from ordinary universities’ computer science programs in recent years? Today, let’s take a look together.

This article is shared by a contributor who graduated in 2018 from a non-key second-tier university, Hunan University of Technology, majoring in computer science. Today, we will listen to the stories of her four dormitory mates.

Roommate A is from Hengyang, Hunan, and her parents are both businesspeople, so her family is relatively well-off. During her university years, her parents hoped she would become a civil servant and find a stable job in the future. After graduation, she lived up to their expectations and successfully secured a position in the local government, earning a monthly salary of several thousand yuan. Although she sometimes needs to go to rural areas, she indeed has a stable career.

Roommate B, from Yueyang, Hunan, comes from an ordinary working-class family. In her senior year, she prepared for the postgraduate entrance examination like everyone else but ultimately did not succeed. After graduation, she found a job at a state-owned enterprise in her hometown. During this time, she switched jobs once and is now responsible for comprehensive management in the company, with an annual salary of about 100,000 yuan.

Roommate C is from Yongzhou, Hunan, and both of her parents work in the local government, holding high expectations for her. After graduation, she entered a state-owned enterprise in her hometown, with an annual salary also around 100,000 yuan. Two years later, she secured a position in the local government of a neighboring county. The last time we met was at Roommate A‘s wedding, where she mentioned that her current salary is not high, with a net monthly income of about 3,000 yuan.

Finally, let me talk about myself. I come from an ordinary rural family in Hengyang, Hunan, and my family is relatively poor. I completed my studies through student loans. After graduation, I entered a central enterprise through campus recruitment, working in administrative logistics, and I have been in this position ever since. Currently, my total monthly income is about 10,000 yuan.

Reflections from the contributor: Looking back over the past 6 years, none of the four girls in our dormitory have engaged in programming work. However, fortunately, we have all leveraged our computer science major to successfully enter government positions or state-owned enterprises while the number of computer science graduates was still not too high, and now we all have stable jobs. This choice seems to be a common trend among many girls.
