Programmable Switch Mode Controller (PSMC) for PIC Microcontrollers

The Programmable Switch Mode Controller (PSMC _Programmable Switch Mode Controller is a kernel-independent peripheral configured in some dedicated MCUs, such as PIC16F178X and others.

PSMC is a high-performance 16-bit pulse width modulator with 6 configurable outputs and multiple operating modes.PSMC is equipped with a dedicated 64MHz clock and can flexibly connect to external inputs and integrated peripherals/ clock sources. These features enable PSMC to provide the highest level of advanced PWM control and precision on 8 bit MCUs.PSMC can simplify the implementation of various applications, such as motor control, lighting, and power supplies.

The specific principles of PSMC can be found in the Microchip technical document AN1468 description.

Features:

16 bit PWM, providing up to 6 configurable outputs.

*Various clock sources: external clock, system clock, and independent 64 MHz oscillator.

*Various input sources: from comparators, external pins, or other peripherals.

*Blanking control for transient filtering.

*Independent rising edge/ falling edge control.

*Dead time with independent rising and falling edge control.

*Polarity control/ automatic shutdown and restart.

*Output gating – external control activation/ deactivation.

*Flexible PWM output modes.

Output modes/ target applications:

*More efficient single-cycle instructions. Used for stepper motor control, brushed DC motor control, power supplies.

ECCP compatible full-bridge PWM. Used for brushed DC motor control.

*Push-pull PWM (+ comparator output). Used for half-bridge and full-bridge power supplies, synchronous drive circuits.

*Pulse skipping PWM (+ comparator output). Used for efficient converters, voltage mode controllers.

*Push-pull PWM, with 4 full-bridge outputs (+ comparator output). Used for DC/AC inverters, D class output drives, induction motor drives.

*Variable frequency – fixed duty cycle PWM (+ comparator output). Used for resonant converters, fluorescent lamp dimming ballasts.

*Three-phase PWM. Used for three-phase BLDC motors, AC inverters.
