Good News
On April 9, 2020, at the conclusion of the 35th Qingdao Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition, Sheng Siyuan, a student from Class 5, Grade 8 of Liu Middle School in Jiaozhou, stood out among many contestants, winning first place in the junior high school group of the Qingdao Science and Technology Innovation Competition. He became the only representative from Jiaozhou at the provincial competition for all three educational stages! This achievement is attributed not only to the child’s hard work but also to the high regard shown by the leaders of the bureau and the school, as well as the careful guidance from Teacher Xian Jiling.
On April 3, we received the notification to prepare for the 35th Qingdao Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition on April 9. With limited time and heavy tasks, we immediately informed the students to prepare. To ensure the students achieve excellent results, Teacher Wei Xiuli from the Equipment Information Department established a WeChat group for all participating students and their mentors. Over the course of April 7-8, the students practiced online three times. The students made significant progress, overcoming initial shyness and becoming more confident. Seeing the children answer questions confidently brought immense satisfaction to the teachers.
Teacher Xian Jiling is Siyuan’s mentor. In addition to teaching information technology, Teacher Xian uses her spare time to guide students in various competitions, achieving excellent results. Her students have won first prizes multiple times and have been selected to participate in competitions in Qingdao, making her a multiple-time recipient of the Outstanding Mentor award. In the 2019 Jiaozhou Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition, four students from our school, Sheng Siyuan, Gao Qunce, Zhou Yanjun, and Yu Mingzhe, all received first prizes.
To achieve excellent results in the competition, Teacher Xian provided multiple sessions of guidance before the holiday, adjusting the competition entries and modifying the program code. An unexpected pandemic delayed our return to school but could not dampen the enthusiasm of Liu Middle School students for learning. In response to this special situation, Teacher Xian established a DingTalk group, providing online guidance through live streaming, explaining competition precautions, and sharing competition experiences. The children not only attended online classes but also took time to repeatedly adjust their entries, which was very challenging. Look, how engaged the child is while operating at home!
Siyuan’s Competition Presentation and Project Introduction
Dear judges, good morning!
I am Sheng Siyuan from Class 5, Grade 8 of Jiaozhou Sixth Middle School. The project I designed is an ultrasonic fan. My design inspiration comes from the fact that Shandong Province is located in the northern temperate zone, where summer temperatures are high, making fans a necessity for people in summer. However, traditional button-operated fans have inflexible wind speed adjustments, leading to two possibilities: either the fan stops at a preset time, failing to meet the user’s cooling needs, or the fan remains on continuously, causing significant resource waste and potentially leading to colds during cooler nighttime hours. Therefore, I designed this ultrasonic fan.
The main innovation of the ultrasonic fan is to use ultrasonic distance detection to adjust the wind speed based on distance: the closer you are, the higher the wind speed; the farther away, the lower the wind speed. If the distance exceeds a certain range, the fan will automatically stop. I used the Arduino UNO R3 development board and L298N motor driver board as the main components, built the frame using a technology building block kit, and used a 130 motor to provide power for the fan’s rotation. An HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor detects distance to adjust the fan speed, and finally, I added a battery box to power the ultrasonic sensor and motor.
During the research process, I primarily used literature review and divided the program into several sections, practicing each section to ensure there were no errors in each step.
However, this product also has some drawbacks. For example, during certain times, the closer you get, the higher the wind speed, which may cause the user to catch a cold. Therefore, my future research direction is to combine temperature detection and distance detection for a comprehensive analysis to adjust the wind speed based on overall data to meet the user’s cooling needs.
Thank you for your attention, judges!
Teacher’s Message
The road of scientific exploration is long and arduous. I hope that Sheng Siyuan will train hard and strive to achieve excellent results in the provincial competition. I also hope this will serve as an opportunity to ignite a new wave of scientific exploration and research among all teachers and students at the school, allowing Liu Middle School students to grow into the backbone of the nation.
