The Maker movement is sweeping the globe, and more and more development boards catering to various needs are emerging, which is certainly a good thing for Makers, not only because there are more choices, but also because prices have become more affordable.
However, faced with numerous development boards, from the most familiar Arduino and Raspberry Pi to the newly emerged Intel Edison, MediaTek Linkit one, or the Taiwan-led BananaPi, how to choose these development platforms is undoubtedly a major challenge for novice Makers.
In terms of Arduino, among all the development platforms for Makers, Arduino can be said to be the most popular and widely used platform. With more and more people using it, Arduino’s official family of products has also launched many models. If you add the imitation and derivative circuit boards, it becomes even more dazzling and difficult to choose.
In this regard, MakerPRO’s technical lead Lu Xiangyang points out that before choosing Arduino products, one must first consider the purpose of using Arduino, whether it is for learning, education, or developing electronic applications. The former mostly uses Arduino UNO, which has developed to the third version, Arduino UNO R3, since its launch in September 2010, making it a suitable development board for beginners; the latter has many options, such as Arduino Yun or the soon-to-be-released Arduino Tian, which are very suitable for the development of Internet of Things applications.
As for which one to choose, it depends on the Maker’s application, how much hardware resources, flash memory, pins, USB, etc. are needed. If the design is more complex and the original development board cannot bear it, then a development board with richer resources must be replaced. In addition, Lu Xiangyang also reminds that for certain situations, such as development boards that are about to be phased out or have already been phased out, it is best for Makers not to purchase them, as the original factory’s support resources may gradually decrease.
In addition to the official Arduino, there are currently many imitation circuit boards on the market or those compatible with Arduino launched by other manufacturers, such as Intel’s Galileo and MediaTek’s Linkit one. Lu Xiangyang stated that some development boards emphasize providing more functions or meeting different demands, allowing Makers to switch to their own development boards after becoming familiar with Arduino. For example, Galileo provides more interfaces or functions and has more connections with PCs; Linkit one offers multiple wireless communication interfaces at once. And which manufacturer’s development board to choose still depends on the application.
