Recently, Elon Musk revealed information about the HW5.0 chip, which he reportedly spent several months designing with the chip team. In Musk’s words, he poured his life energy into it.
The HW5.0 chip will have a performance increase of 40 times compared to HW4.0, boasting over 8 times the computing power, 9 times the memory capacity, and 5 times the memory bandwidth.
Additionally, the HW5.0 has eliminated traditional GPUs and ISPs. The power consumption has slightly increased from 170W in HW4.0 to 200W, but the computing power has skyrocketed to 1080-1800 TOPS, and the memory has doubled to 32GB.
This means that the latest FSD neural network will perform better, enabling more precise object recognition and longer-range predictions.
Before the release of FSD v14, Musk stated that efforts would be made to adapt FSD for HW3.0 vehicles. If adaptation is not possible, older FSD owners with HW3.0 vehicles will receive free upgrades to the latest chip to support the newest FSD.
However, this promise seems yet to be fulfilled. Older owners have received another piece of good news: during Tesla’s third-quarter financial meeting a few days ago, it was announced that FSD v14 Lite will be pushed to HW3.0 models in the second quarter of 2026. It is described as a youth version, but some might call it a stripped-down version. This appears to be Tesla’s first compensation commitment to HW3.0 owners.
After all, changing hardware is indeed too costly, while software adaptation is relatively cheaper. Frankly speaking, it might just be an upgrade of the existing FSD v12 version adapted for HW3.0, renamed FSD v14 Lite, and we wouldn’t know.
With such a powerful HW5.0 chip, do you hope Tesla will provide upgrades or adapt FSD for HW3.0? If it’s a paid upgrade, would you be willing? Feel free to discuss in the comments.
