DRAM Product Prices Continue to Rise, Low-Capacity eMMC Demand Drives Upgrades in Related Applications

The supply of old-process DRAM resources is still tight, leading to continued price increases. Memory manufacturers are firmly reporting price hikes for channel memory modules, industrial memory modules, and LPDDR4X products. Recently, due to the skyrocketing prices of some channel resources, the price of channel DDR4 memory modules has risen the most, with some products seeing a cumulative price increase of over 30% in just two weeks.

Additionally, as storage manufacturers have stopped producing MLC NAND and 256Gb TLC NAND, some resources remain in short supply, causing the prices of low-capacity embedded products to rise rapidly. Notably, the price of low-capacity eMMC has not only doubled compared to the end of last year, but the prices of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB eMMC have also become nearly identical. As MLC NAND supply continues to dwindle, this will accelerate the upgrade of storage capacities in application terminals such as TVs, security systems, and POS machines.

On the upstream resource side, today the price of Flash Wafers remains stable, while most DDR4 chip prices have significantly increased, and some DDR5 chip prices have also risen. The ongoing shortage of DDR4 chips keeps market activity high, with some products experiencing violent price increases of over 20%. For instance, DDR5 16Gb Major/16Gb eTT have risen to $4.45/$3.40, while DDR4 16Gb 3200/16Gb eTT/8Gb 3200/8Gb eTT have surged to $4.80/$2.80/$2.70/$1.41.

The price increase driven by the discontinuation of some DDR4 products by manufacturers continues. Recently, the supply side of the channel market has seen a general price jump of around 20%, with low-end resources also rising significantly due to an active market. The atmosphere of trade speculation has intensified. The skyrocketing resource prices have made it difficult for channel manufacturers to accept, leading to cautious shipments, and the prices of channel DDR4 memory modules have also been raised in line with the significant increase in costs. If resource prices continue to rise, channel DDR4 memory modules will likely remain on an upward trend in the short term.

Similar to the channel market, industry memory modules have also been affected by DDR resource price increases, prompting industry manufacturers to raise the prices of corresponding memory module products. However, the increase is more moderate compared to the channel market. Except for some industry clients with low inventory levels who need to replenish stock and accept price increases, other clients with sufficient inventory are less accepting of the price hikes. In terms of SSDs, the overall market demand remains stable, and industry manufacturers are generally shipping to customers as per agreements. However, end customers in PCs and other terminals are actively introducing new SSD solutions from multiple storage manufacturers, and with the increase in available options, competition in the industry SSD market has intensified, although overall prices remain stable.

Due to the discontinuation of MLC NAND by manufacturers, the prices of MLC NAND Wafers have risen sharply. With high resource prices, storage manufacturers are raising the prices of corresponding finished products. Some customers with a rigid demand for low-capacity eMMC have no choice but to accept price increases and purchase as needed. Notably, as prices continue to rise, the prices of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB eMMC have become nearly identical. The overall supply of LPDDR4X remains tight, with some customers actively inquiring but finding it difficult to meet their needs. Under the conditions of supply shortages, brand manufacturers continue to adopt a price increase strategy, and this week LPDDR4X prices have generally continued to rise.
