Blowing Series
Balloon is originally an extremely fragile object, and Seungjin Yang has transformed it into a piece of furniture (also a sculpture) that can support the human body, creating a significant visual contrast. He applies layers of epoxy resin to the balloon, approximately eight layers, until a hard shell forms on the surface, stabilizing its structure. Thus, the playful balloon chair provides a functional experience that allows one to sit securely on it.
Yang Seungjin (Seungjin Yang), born in 1986 in a mountainous city in the Far East of South Korea, studied metal arts and design in university. He is known for his unique series of balloon furniture, inspired by childhood memories of playing with balloons. He aims to explore the contradictions and playfulness between materials by transforming the soft, fragile material of balloons into sturdy, usable furniture. His Blowing Series includes chairs, stools, and benches made from balloons, fulfilling the small fantasies of childhood and making one believe that anything is possible.
