Abstract: Bengbu’s ‘China Sensor Valley’ has formed a complete industrial chain for IoT sensors, gathering over 200 enterprises. Huaxin Micro-Nano has an 8-inch MEMS wafer line, and Fuyuan components achieve electroplating precision of 0.01 microns. In the first half of the year, the output value of enterprises above designated size increased by 50.1%, with nearly 10 billion yuan in funds set up, and an expected output value of over 30 billion yuan by 2027.

According to reports from Central Radio Network in Hefei on September 15, in recent years, Bengbu, Anhui has closely focused on the high-end, intelligent, and green development direction of manufacturing, continuously promoting industrial transformation and upgrading, especially achieving significant results in the field of smart sensors. Located in Bengbu, China Sensor Valley is striving to create a gathering place for smart sensors with the most controllable core components and the widest variety of sensors, based on the technological advantages of leading enterprises such as the 214th Institute of China Ordnance Industry Group.

Entering ‘China Sensor Valley’: The industrial ecosystem is becoming increasingly complete

In the production workshop of Anhui Huaxin Micro-Nano Integrated Circuit Co., Ltd. within ‘China Sensor Valley’, a nationally leading fully automated 8-inch MEMS wafer production line is operating in an orderly manner, with a planned monthly capacity of 30,000 wafers. It is expected that by 2027, it will become the largest MEMS wafer production line in China. As a result, the core component of smart sensors—the MEMS chip—will be produced in Bengbu, supplying smart sensor enterprises in Anhui and even across the country, providing strong support for the safety of the entire industrial chain.

Production workshop of Anhui Huaxin Micro-Nano Integrated Circuit Co., Ltd.

Ding Jingxiu, Deputy General Manager of Anhui Huaxin Micro-Nano Integrated Circuit Co., Ltd., introduced that many enterprises value Bengbu’s wafer manufacturing capabilities, which have become a ‘magnet’ for attracting investment in China Sensor Valley. Recently, the production base project of Jiangsu Furui Micro-Nano Sensor Technology Co., Ltd. settled in China Sensor Valley, mainly engaged in the R&D and production of automotive-grade gas and high-pressure MSG force sensors. ‘They not only need a MEMS pilot platform but also require a platform that can provide mass production and processing services. Our established ‘customized, flexible MEMS processing platform base’ just meets the mass production needs of enterprises.’

Not far away, Bengbu Fuyuan New Components Co., Ltd. focuses on metal-glass packaging and high-end electroplating processes. The company’s founder, Guo Maoyu, told reporters that they can provide precision electroplating for workpieces ranging from a few millimeters to hundreds of millimeters, with a coating thickness precision of 0.01 microns, and salt spray testing lasting up to thousands of hours. Their products are widely used in sensors, microelectronics packaging, and high-end medical devices.

Currently, China Sensor Valley has formed a complete industrial chain system covering chip design, wafer manufacturing, packaging testing, material equipment, and terminal applications, gathering over 200 related enterprises. In the first half of this year, the output value of smart sensor enterprises above designated size in Bengbu Economic Development Zone, represented by Sensor Valley, increased by 50.1% year-on-year. It is expected that by 2027, the output value of Sensor Valley will exceed 30 billion yuan.

Innovative platforms + policy support, building a strong industrial ‘magnetic field’

First-class R&D capabilities are the core engine of industrial development. Currently, Bengbu has established 39 provincial-level and above scientific and technological innovation platforms, including 6 national-level ones. It is understood that targeting key processes in smart sensors, China Sensor Valley has fully launched the construction of 9 demonstration lines for the common technology center, providing MEMS sensor full-process manufacturing services for resident enterprises, and building a new type of technological innovation system of ‘concept verification – incubation – small-scale trial’.

The ‘National Key Laboratory of Precision Micro-Nano Manufacturing Technology Yangtze River Delta (Bengbu) Industry-Education Integration Collaborative Center’ co-built by the Bengbu Municipal Government, Xi’an Jiaotong University, and the North Microelectronics Research Institute has been put into operation; the Anhui MEMS Technology Industry Innovation Research Institute has been approved for establishment; and Lanzhou University and Xici Technology have co-built a ‘Magnetic Sensor Joint Laboratory’… These platforms continuously promote the gathering of high-quality scientific research resources in Bengbu.

China Sensor Valley

On the policy level, Anhui Province issued the ‘Several Policies to Support the Development of China Sensor Valley’ last year, providing comprehensive support in five areas: funding, innovation, talent, etc. The Bengbu Municipal Government has also established an intelligent sensor fund system of nearly 10 billion yuan, with 4 operational funds totaling 2.6 billion yuan, assisting project implementation and enterprise growth.

According to Tang Wei, a member of the Party Working Committee and Deputy Director of the Management Committee of Bengbu Economic Development Zone, in the next step, China Sensor Valley will seize the opportunity of integrating technological innovation and industrial innovation, accelerating the transformation of smart sensing technology ‘specialty’ into smart sensing industry ‘special products’, continuously enhancing the competitiveness and influence of the park, and striving to build China Sensor Valley into an influential source of technological innovation in the smart sensing industry, making new contributions to achieving high-level technological self-reliance and self-improvement in the field of smart sensing.

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and intelligent manufacturing, sensors, as the hardware foundation for ‘perceiving everything’, are ushering in unprecedented market opportunities. Bengbu, an old industrial city, is leveraging ‘China Sensor Valley’ as a fulcrum to pry open the future of a trillion-dollar smart sensing industry.
