OpenAI is currently collaborating with Apple’s former Chief Design Officer Jony Ive to develop AI hardware. Many employees at Ive’s design firm LoveFrom come from Apple.

However, since OpenAI acquired Ive’s AI startup io for over $6 billion, many ordinary engineers from Apple’s hardware department have also become targets for poaching by OpenAI. In just the past month, OpenAI has recruited over 40 employees for its device department, many of whom are directly from Apple.
Apple is very dissatisfied with OpenAI’s poaching activities, which include key executives, managers, and engineers. The areas they cover are extensive: camera engineering, iPhone and Mac hardware, chips, device testing and reliability, industrial design, manufacturing, audio, smartwatches, Vision Pro development, software, and human factors engineering.
