Nowadays, smartphones are a must-have for everyone, and mobile networks are indispensable. However, have you noticed that some wireless networks in your phone settings are called wifi while others are called wlan? While enjoying the convenience of wireless networks, be sure to keep your eyes open to avoid getting ripped off!

Although wifi settings are rare, they do exist. Some might say it’s just a naming issue; as long as it connects to wifi, who cares what it’s called? That’s right, even I initially thought that way, since it doesn’t affect your normal usage. We subconsciously feel that the term wifi is more fitting, but the reality is quite the opposite.

The term wifi has long been ingrained in the public consciousness
WLAN also known as Wireless Local Area Network, includes two types of internet access: WAPI and Wi-Fi, which is equivalent to a mobile phone’s wireless network card, with a signal range that can cover up to 5 kilometers. (In China, it is mandated that all domestically sold phones must have a network access license and must support both WAPI and Wi-Fi technologies)
Wi-Fi is a type of technology under the WLAN network. Similar to Bluetooth, it is a short-range wireless technology used primarily in offices and homes.
Additionally, the difference in naming also relates to whether your phone is genuine or counterfeit!!!

Can you really distinguish between genuine and counterfeit goods?
According to national regulations: all mobile phones sold in mainland China (also known as domestic models) must support both Wi-Fi and WAPI technologies to access WLAN networks, and phones that only support Wi-Fi cannot be sold.
This means that whether you are using Android or iPhone, as long as it is a genuine product, the name of the wireless network must be (WLAN) or (Wireless Local Area Network). In contrast, non-domestic communication devices (commonly known as counterfeit goods) or tablets (which do not require a network access license) will uniformly display the network name as Wi-Fi.
If you bought a genuine domestic model but it shows Wi-Fi, then you have definitely been sold a counterfeit product, and there’s a high chance you were ripped off by the dealer at the price of a genuine model, and it might even be a refurbished device.
