Renesas Electronics Launches Comprehensive Lithium-Ion Battery Management Platform with Pre-Validated Firmware

Renesas Electronics Corporation has launched an integrated solution designed to manage lithium-ion battery packs in a variety of battery-powered consumer products, including electric bicycles, vacuum cleaners, robots, and drones. With the provided pre-validated firmware, the R-BMS F (Ready Battery Management System with Fixed Firmware) significantly reduces the learning curve for developers in the relevant technical fields, enabling them to quickly design safe and energy-efficient battery management systems.

The R-BMS F solution is designed for lithium-ion battery packs with 2 to 4 cells and 3 to 10 cells in series (S), covering Renesas’ Fuel Gauge Integrated Circuits (FGICs), integrated Microcontroller Units (MCUs), analog battery front ends, pre-programmed firmware, software, development tools, and comprehensive documentation. Currently, these components are all integrated into a complete evaluation kit, which is available for immediate shipment.

In battery management systems, firmware plays a crucial role. It is responsible for monitoring the battery’s State of Charge (SoC), State of Health (SoH), current, and temperature, while actively balancing the voltage of individual battery cells and detecting faults. However, in some scenarios, developers of consumer electronics may lack the expertise required to develop control algorithms. These algorithms are essential for ensuring that the battery operates within a safe temperature range and maintains sufficient lifespan over multiple charge and discharge cycles.

Renesas’ R-BMS F solution comes equipped with built-in and pre-tested firmware, specifically designed to work in conjunction with the Fuel Gauge IC’s onboard MCU. The firmware includes key pre-programmed features that maximize battery life and ensure safe operation, including cell balancing, current control, and voltage and temperature monitoring functions. To enhance system flexibility, this battery management system allows developers to set multiple parameters through a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to meet specific needs and adjust the solution for different battery chemistries without the need for a complete Integrated Development Environment (IDE).

Both R-BMS F solutions come with a complete evaluation kit that includes all the hardware, software, tools, and documentation needed to kickstart development. The underlying hardware supporting R-BMS F operation is Renesas’ Fuel Gauge IC solution, which integrates the analog battery front end with the ultra-low-power RL78 MCU in a single compact package. The analog section accurately measures the voltage, current, and temperature of individual battery cells while controlling external Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFETs) and converting analog data into digital signals. The digital section integrates synchronous functions, including the main Central Processing Unit (CPU), clock, timer, and serial interfaces.

The evaluation kit also includes: pre-programmed firmware stored in embedded flash memory, supporting flexible settings for battery pack and battery chemistry parameters; Universal Serial Bus (USB) System Management Bus (SMBus) interface; GUI-based software; cables for communication with the host system; dedicated parameter setting development tools; and comprehensive documentation, including schematics and Engineering Bill of Materials (eBOM). With these resources, developers can confidently innovate in smart power management systems, safely monitor battery usage, extend battery life, and reduce environmental impact. Renesas plans to adopt this turnkey R-BMS F solution in all future Fuel Gauge IC products.

The R-BMS F solution for 3 to 10 series cells (approximately 12V to 40V) operates based on Renesas’ RAJ240100 and RAJ240090 lithium-ion battery Fuel Gauge ICs, targeting applications in electric bicycles, electric mobility devices, vacuum cleaners, robots, drones, as well as industrial, consumer, and medical systems.

Currently, both R-BMS F solutions are in mass production supply.
