Following the Samsung Exynos 1080 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 870, MediaTek has also launched its 2021 “mid-range flagship” – the Dimensity 1200 and Dimensity 1100 mobile platforms. Before the Dimensity 2000 is released, these two twins will take on the responsibility of helping MediaTek stabilize its mid-to-high-end market. Now, with the Dimensity 1100 debuting in the vivo S9, the question is simple – can the Dimensity 1100 compete with the Snapdragon 870 and Exynos 1080? How much improvement does it have compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 1000+?First, let’s review the basic specifications of the Dimensity 1100.
The Dimensity 1100 uses TSMC’s latest 6nm EUV process technology and features a “4+4” big.LITTLE architecture, consisting of 4 Cortex-A78 big cores (2.6GHz) and 4 Cortex-A55 cores (2.0GHz), integrating a Mali-G77MC9 GPU, and emphasizes HyperEngine 3.0 and a six-core APU 3.0.In the GeekBench CPU benchmark software, the Dimensity 1100, with its new Cortex-A78 architecture cores, shows a significant performance lead over the Dimensity 1000+. However, due to its relatively lower big core frequency, its single-core performance does not match that of the higher frequency Exynos 1080 and Snapdragon 870.
The good news is that, due to the Dimensity 1100’s 4+4 big.LITTLE architecture, it has more big cores, resulting in the highest multi-core performance among processors in the same class. The Dimensity 1100 continues to use the Mali-G77MC9 GPU from the Dimensity 1000+, so its 3D performance does not show a significant gap compared to the Dimensity 1000+, only achieving some performance gains through increased frequency, but still slightly lagging behind the Exynos 1080 and having a considerable distance from the Snapdragon 870.
In the familiar AnTuTu and Lu Master tests, the Dimensity 1100 performs well, significantly surpassing the Dimensity 1000+ and basically matching the Exynos 1080.Overall, the Dimensity 1100 meets expectations, with a noticeable improvement in CPU performance, a slight enhancement in GPU performance, sufficient to withstand the pressure from the Exynos 1080. Next, we will also see the Dimensity 1200, which introduces the concept of super big cores, and its GPU frequency has also been further increased, making its overall performance closer to that of the Snapdragon 870.
Of course, what we are more looking forward to is when the MediaTek Dimensity 2000 will be mass-produced, and we hope that the Dimensity 2000 can directly adopt ARM’s latest Cortex-A79 and Mali-G79 GPU.
