LoRa Alliance® Report Shows Accelerated Application of LoRaWAN® Technology in Smart Buildings

Fremont, California– September 17, 2025 – The LoRa Alliance® today announced that, based on member feedback, smart buildings have become the fastest-growing vertical market for LoRaWAN deployments. Core applications driving rapid return on investment (ROI) for owners include: energy and operational efficiency optimization, environmental monitoring, and preventive maintenance. Regulations such as the French BACS decree, which mandates gradual reductions in energy consumption, have also accelerated the application process in this field.

Alper Yegin, CEO of the LoRa Alliance, stated: “The smart building market has truly taken off this year as large building management companies realize significant benefits from deploying LoRaWAN. Transforma Insights research shows that low-power wide-area network technologies like LoRaWAN will grow from a scale of 439 million in 2024 to nearly 1.8 billion by 2034. The application of LoRaWAN in smart buildings is experiencing explosive growth as operators recognize the substantial benefits and strong ROI that this technology can deliver post-implementation.”

Traditional building management has long relied on wired systems, which are now being replaced by faster and more flexible wireless technologies. Among existing solutions, LoRaWAN stands out as the only wireless technology that combines wall-penetrating capabilities with low power characteristics. This unique combination sets it apart in the smart building sector, accelerating the technology’s adoption and creating new realms of operational efficiency and connectivity for smart building environments.

LoRaWAN networks can easily coexist with other wireless networks, as they complement technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 5G, and RFID, further enhancing their applicability in smart building applications. With seamless integration capabilities into building management standards like BACnet, KNX, and Modbus, LoRaWAN provides a convenient path for modernizing older facilities while preserving the value of existing building management systems. For new projects, its advantages are equally significant—achieving comprehensive optimization management of building environments, energy consumption, and space utilization through a rich array of certified sensors.

Latest Updates

Verizon Business has launched the “Verizon Sensor Insights” solution at the NBA Atlanta Hawks’ home State Farm Arena, enhancing operational efficiency through real-time monitoring of IoT sensors. This solution supports multiple IoT protocols, including LoRaWAN, allowing users to manage sensors, gateways, and connection statuses through a centralized portal for optimized decision-making.

Milesight and Tridium have completed system integration, merging Milesight’s advanced IoT sensing capabilities with the Tridium Niagara framework. This initiative aims to simplify the system integration process for smart building projects, enhancing overall efficiency and helping clients shorten system learning, configuration, and deployment cycles.

A commercial building in Dubai, after deploying Milesight’s LoRaWAN smart lighting control system, significantly improved energy efficiency and operational convenience. Leveraging IoT technology, the building reduced lighting energy consumption by 25% within a month, saving approximately 11,000 hours of lighting usage monthly.

TEKTELIC‘s KONA micro-gateway features strong indoor coverage (capable of penetrating up to 4 concrete walls), battery backup, and remote configuration capabilities, assisting property managers in quickly meeting New York City’s newly enacted gas safety regulations (Local Law 157), which require all rooms with gas appliances to be equipped with natural gas alarms.

A high-rise apartment in New York was deemed “uninsurable” by insurance companies due to two major water incidents (a $4 million pipe burst flood and a $2.6 million irrigation system freeze). The management collaborated with ProSentry to install 320 smart LoRaWAN water sensors, which detected 31 leaks in real-time and promptly identified door freezing events, preventing further losses.

Minew deployed hundreds of LoRaWAN sensors in major hospitals in Hong Kong through a government-led GWIN network. This solution enhanced ward occupancy visualization, refrigeration compliance, and indoor air quality—providing real-time insights and scalable infrastructure for tens of thousands of square meters.

Swisscom has deployed on-demand LoRaWAN services for facility management inspections, reducing work time for the postal real estate management company by 30%.

MClimate deployed a LoRaWAN smart flood prevention solution at the Millennium Business Center in Lausanne, Switzerland, effectively preventing water damage through instant flood detection.

Kerlink and Microshare deployed a LoRaWAN IoT network at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability in London. Within just a few days, sensors achieved real-time monitoring of bed occupancy rates, energy consumption, refrigerator temperatures, and equipment tracking, significantly improving hospital operational efficiency, enhancing patient care, and reducing operational costs without impacting core IT systems.
