His great-grandfather Tang Gui served as the General of the Cavalry of the Northern Zhou and was granted the title of Duke of Anyi; his grandfather Tang Erzheng was the Governor of the Eastern Commandery of the Northern Zhou; and his father Tang Xie served as the magistrate of Xianyang. His sons Tang Xianshen and Tang Xianzhe served as the governors of Chen Prefecture and the Right General of the Imperial Guard, respectively, and his grandchildren continued the family tradition of serving in government. Although Tang Jian was one of the 24 meritorious ministers of the Lingyan Pavilion, his main achievements were at the beginning of the founding; Tang Lin was a famous minister, but his influence was limited to the judicial field; and literary figures like Tang Yanqian and Tang Qu could not compare to Tang Xiujing’s dual talents in literature and military.

In contrast, Tang Xiujing’s achievements spanned the reigns of Wu Zetian, Zhongzong, and Ruizong, enduring numerous wars against Tubo, Turks, and Khitan, rising to the position of prime minister and being granted the title of Duke of the State.
