Uppsala, Sweden, July 8, 2025 – IAR, a global leader in embedded systems development software solutions, announced that its embedded development platform has officially launched production-level support for Zephyr RTOS. This support is fully available starting from IAR’s Arm Development Toolchain v9.70.

This advancement provides a solid assurance for developers looking to adopt Zephyr RTOS in commercial and safety-critical embedded applications. Development teams can leverage IAR’s professional-grade toolchain, advanced debugging capabilities, and long-term technical support to enhance project development efficiency and product quality.
Thomas Andersson, Chief Product Officer at IAR, stated: “With the introduction of production-level support for Zephyr RTOS in Arm Development Toolchain v9.70, developers can combine the flexibility of the open-source RTOS with our functionally safety-certified toolchain, robust debugging, and code analysis capabilities to create scalable, secure, and industry-standard embedded systems.”
Zephyr RTOS, developed under the Linux Foundation, is known for its lightweight, scalable, and community-driven innovations, making it highly suitable for various embedded and IoT application scenarios. IAR officially joined the Zephyr project in January 2025 and continues to contribute to this open-source community. With the IAR platform, developers can achieve commercial-grade reliability and development efficiency while maintaining the flexibility of open-source.
Kate Stewart, Vice President of Trusted Embedded Systems at the Linux Foundation, remarked: “Zephyr RTOS is designed to meet the growing demand in the embedded and IoT markets for high-reliability, flexible RTOS solutions. IAR has a strong reputation in high-reliability software development and performance optimization, and this collaboration helps bridge the gap between open-source innovation and the stringent requirements of commercial deployment, which is particularly significant in safety-critical application scenarios.”
Starting from Zephyr version 4.1, developers can use IAR’s Arm Development Toolchain for building, currently supporting various target hardware platforms from major chip manufacturers such as NXP, ST, and Nordic, as well as the QEMU simulation environment. The IAR platform also offers highly optimized compilers, RTOS-aware debugging, and advanced code analysis features. Through CI/CD integration, it provides developers with a modern embedded development experience and deep insights into task scheduling, system behavior, and overall runtime performance.
IAR offers a TÜV SÜD certified functional safety version of its development toolchain to safeguard safety-critical applications. IAR is also set to launch a functional safety version of the development toolchain supporting Zephyr RTOS, meeting international functional safety standards such as ISO 26262, IEC 61508, and IEC 62304, helping development teams better meet regulatory compliance requirements. Combined with continuous integration capabilities and advanced diagnostic features, the IAR platform aims to accelerate product development and enhance confidence in safety-critical applications.
