Midea in Wuhan, Hubei, was originally a "factory with ten thousand workers". Currently, during the peak season for air conditioning production, it only employs over 3,000 workers, and even the originally three-story cafeteria has closed two floors.
While the workforce has sharply decreased, the factory's manufacturing efficiency has increased by 70% over three years, and the delivery cycle has been shortened by 50%. Monthly production capacity continues to break records.

Replacing Humans with Machines, Disrupting Traditional Processes
To understand this, we need to go back three years. Three years ago, Midea’s Wuhan factory invested 500 million yuan to deploy over 200 robots and tens of thousands of sensors in the factory.
Midea Wuhan Refrigeration Equipment Co., Ltd. General Manager Yang Hao: Previously, we mainly relied on manpower to achieve breakthroughs in production capacity. Now, we primarily rely on technological innovation, including equipment innovation, to meet the continuous breakthroughs in production capacity.
Now, when you enter Midea’s workshop, you will find that there are no people on the assembly line.
Replacing Humans with Machines has also brought about a disruption of traditional processes. This online programming device, which was just put into production last month, can complete program injection into chips in seconds.
Midea Wuhan Refrigeration Equipment Co., Ltd. Process Engineer Li Dingqi: The original chip programming method required at least 8 hours of preparation time. With online programming, this 8 hours is completely eliminated, allowing compatibility with 160 different programs.
Building an intelligent factory is not cost-effective by merely spending money; sometimes it cannot even be purchased. This online programming device was independently developed by Midea and can switch models in 30 seconds. Ten sets have already been deployed in the workshop. Previously, the company also inquired about imported equipment with the same performance, which was eight times the price of domestic products. Midea has already developed 57 such innovative products.
Smart manufacturing changes the entire production process
Smart manufacturing also impacts every aspect of production.
Duan Xuewei is a logistics driver who delivers goods to Midea’s Wuhan factory three times a day. Now, he reserves a parking space via his mobile phone, scans a code to unload upon arrival, and releases the parking space, all in one go.
In this factory, over 800 logistics vehicles enter and exit daily, and information management has greatly improved logistics efficiency.
Midea Wuhan Refrigeration Equipment Co., Ltd. Logistics Manager Wang Feng: When we first implemented this system, it took 161 minutes for the entire process from supplier entry to exit. Today, our latest data shows it takes about 45 minutes.
This intelligent logistics has also extended to the workshop. By scanning a QR code, the corresponding shelf location lights up and displays the quantity to be picked.
Compared to three years ago, the comprehensive intelligent transformation has increased Midea Wuhan factory’s manufacturing efficiency by 70%, and the delivery cycle has been shortened from 12 days to 6 days. Last month, the factory’s monthly production capacity exceeded 800,000 units, and next year, the target will be set at 1 million. To achieve this, the company will invest over 100 million yuan in further intelligent upgrades.
