Excess or deficiency of hormones in the body can lead to health hazards, including metabolic disorders and abnormal mental stress. Measuring hormone levels typically requires professional laboratory operations. Recently, Scitech Daily introduced a new type of artificial biosensor that can conveniently perform real-time hormone monitoring with more accurate results.

Experts explain that current bioengineering technology can design and create new proteins based on AI. The research team designed a pair of engineered proteins that interact when they bind with hormone molecules, producing a light signal. The stronger the light, the higher the hormone concentration. By mixing a drop of blood or urine with the biosensor solution and taking a photo with a smartphone camera, the corresponding app can interpret the light signal and convert it into hormone concentration values, allowing individuals to assess their “mental stress levels” with sensitivity reaching picomolar levels.

The biosensor is not only highly sensitive and easy to operate, but it also expands the detection range of hormone levels, allowing for quantification of hormone levels outside the standard range. Experts anticipate that this technology can be used for multiple monitoring of hormone levels, managing circadian rhythm disorders and adrenal diseases, and in the future, it could also be applied in drug development to address health issues caused by hormone deficiencies or excesses.
