Linux | 22. Decompression and MD5 Checksum Verification

Introduction

In the previous lesson, we introduced the use of soft links and hard links in Linux | 21 to help save some coding time and reduce disk storage space. However, using links only saves redundant space; to truly save disk storage, we need to rely on file compression. This section will mainly discuss the usage of commands such as gzip, zip, bzip2, and tar for packaging/compression, as well as the MD5 checksum verification of compressed files. You can practice the following commands along with the video:

gzip -c biomamba.txt > biomamba.txt.gz
gzip biomamba.txt
zcat biomamba.txt.gz | head
gzip -v biomamba1.txt
gzip test.png
gunzip -c biomamba.txt.gz
gzip -d biomamba.txt.gz

zip biomamba.txt.zip biomamba.txt
zip -r ../test.dir.zip ../test.dir/
unzip ../test.dir.zip

bzip2 -k biomamba.txt
bzip2 biomamba.txt
bunzip2 biomamba.txt.bz2

# Simple packaging: tar -cvf finename.tar finename
# Package and compress to gz: tar -czf finename.tar.gz finename
# Package and compress to bz2: tar -cjf finename.tar.bz2 finename
# Decompress tar: tar -xzf finename.tar.gz

md5sum ./* > md5.txt
md5sum -c md5.txt
