Introduction to Management Information Systems (MIS) in the US
The full name of MIS is Management Information System. There are many similar programs to MIS, such as Information System and Information Technology Management. For example, the related program at the University of Washington is called Information System, while Worcester Polytechnic Institute offers Information Technology Management.
Management Information Systems (MIS) is a human-centered system that uses computer hardware, software, and network devices to collect, transmit, store, process, and organize information. It perfectly combines business and information technology, making information acquisition more convenient and work more efficient, greatly improving organizational operational efficiency. Unlike information systems, MIS is a planned system that achieves management functions by collecting, storing, and transmitting necessary data.
The MIS program can be roughly divided into five directions based on different school focuses: Information Technology Management, Information Security Policy Management, Information Technology, Data Science, and Library Information Science.
The three main employment directions for MIS professionals: Software developers/network or system administrators/business information management. Those familiar with the US should know that these employment directions are currently among the highest-paying fields in the country. The MIS program not only has relatively easy employment opportunities but also offers very competitive salary prospects. As long as you have solid professional knowledge and rich project experience, employment will not be a major issue.
Choosing Schools for Management Information Systems (MIS) in the US:
Choosing the right schools for applying to MIS is the most critical factor in successfully obtaining an offer in the future. Generally speaking, if you choose the right schools, the probability of receiving an offer is absolutely over 70%.
You can consider the following dimensions when choosing schools for MIS:
1. Rankings
Generally, refer to the US News graduate program rankings, specifically the Best Information Systems Programs rankings. The complete rankings include average GPA and GMAT scores; remember, these are averages.

2. GPA, GMAT/GRE, TOEFL/IELTS Requirements
GRE/GMAT: Generally, MIS programs offered under business schools accept both GRE and GMAT, while most programs not under business schools tend to only accept GRE.
TOEFL: Top-ranked schools generally require a TOEFL score of 100, with some schools accepting scores of 90 or higher.
Work Experience: Students are advised to have relevant work experience, though few schools have strict requirements for it.
Undergraduate Major Background: Most programs do not have strong requirements for applicants’ undergraduate major backgrounds. However, applicants with backgrounds in statistics, mathematics, or computer science may find it easier at the graduate level (especially for technical programs).

4. Geographic Location
Since MIS has a background combining engineering and business, students enrolled in this program have a relatively high probability of finding internships and job opportunities in the US. If applicants aim to stay in the US or consider job opportunities there, it is strongly recommended to choose locations with a good IT atmosphere, such as:
California
Even applying to top schools like Stanford or Berkeley is quite challenging; other schools in California may still be worth considering even if they are not highly ranked. After all, Silicon Valley is there, and the demand is there. Some companies will still prioritize local graduates when applying for internships and jobs.
Seattle, Washington
For example, the University of Washington, Seattle is a hub for Amazon and Intel, hosting several recruitment fairs each year, which is a great advantage.
North Carolina’s Triangle Area
With Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University as the main institutions, the Triangle Area has high-tech parks, including companies like SAS, IBM, Cisco, and EMC.
New York
Although New York is known as a financial center, there is also a huge demand for high-tech companies. Since Columbia University does not have related programs, graduates from New York University (NYU) and Fordham University have a significant advantage in finding internships and jobs in New York due to their geographical advantages.
