Fitness at Your Doorstep! Nanchang Community Embedded Sports Venues Support the Creation of a "15-Minute Fitness Circle"

In the past, the issues of “long distances to fitness facilities, few facilities, and low quality” troubled many residents of Nanchang. Now, this pain point is being effectively addressed. Recently, the 9 community embedded sports venues project, meticulously crafted by our city’s Architectural and Landscape Design Institute team, has transformed from blueprint to reality. These venues are scattered like pearls across the core living areas of Donghu District, Xihu District, Qingshanhu District, and other nine counties, covering a total construction area of 18,788.98 square meters, with outdoor sports fields and parking lots reaching 52,936.93 square meters. This marks a substantial breakthrough in the construction of Nanchang’s “15-minute fitness circle,” truly integrating the beautiful vision of “fitness at your doorstep” into the daily lives of citizens.

“The 9 venues aim to achieve full coverage of core areas, aligning with the population density and site conditions of each district while ensuring balanced service radii. This is a precise response to urban livelihood needs.” At the project’s inception, the chief engineer of the Municipal Urban Planning Institute, Fu Gang, set the tone for the project. To ensure the venues are truly “embedded” in the community life circle, the design team initiated a two-month comprehensive survey. They divided into six teams, equipped with surveying instruments, to delve into over 30 candidate sites in the mixed railway areas of Donghu District, the old Hongda business circle in Xihu District, and the junctions of urban villages in Qingshanhu District, as well as over 120 communities, distributing and collecting more than 1,200 resident questionnaires to accurately capture the differentiated needs of different areas: the old city focuses on “walkability,” while the new city needs to consider “diversity in sports,” and densely populated resettlement areas require adaptation for “all-age usage.” After 18 specialized discussions, combined with population data and urban planning, the final selection of the 9 venue locations achieved “no dead zone coverage” of core living areas.

“Venues are not just ‘containers for sports’; every detail must revolve around ‘people.’” This is the consensus of the design team. To achieve the goal of being “compact yet versatile,” the team repeatedly refined space utilization and facility configuration. The core indoor layout was established through 1:100 model simulations and movement flow simulations, confirming an efficient standard configuration of “one basket and six wings,” improving space utilization by 30%. For special narrow sites like those in Xihu District, the team innovatively adopted a “one basket and four wings” layout to ensure core functions remain intact. Supporting facilities directly address livelihood details: a 25-square-meter small commercial space meets supply needs, restrooms are equipped with changing rooms and hot water showers, and even creatively utilize the overhead space in public areas to expand fitness zones. Outdoor venues are tailored individually, adding table tennis tables in Qingshanhu District and new gateball and tennis courts in newly built areas, ensuring each venue precisely matches the sports preferences of surrounding populations.

“Rejecting the one-size-fits-all approach, we want citizens to think ‘this is our community’s venue’ when they see the facilities.” The design team deeply explored local culture, allowing the architecture itself to become a medium for telling the story of Nanchang. The Donghu District venue uses shipping containers as a metaphor, echoing the railway industry’s heritage; the Xihu District venue employs off-white faux stone materials and grid patterns to replicate the texture of the old Hongda business circle; the red brick geometric abstraction of the Qinyunpu District venue restores memories of old industrial civilization; and the asymmetrical roof of the Wanli venue cleverly echoes the undulating Meiling mountains… Nine venues, nine unique flavors, with culture becoming the most profound identifier, deeply rooting the sports spaces in the community’s cultural context.

Faced with the enormous challenge of simultaneous design and construction of the 9 venues, the design team established a “9-venue special team,” implementing a model of “one venue, one responsible person + professional support.” Through a system of “daily online meetings + weekly on-site coordination meetings,” as well as efficient processes like “grid-based + staggered services,” the team completed all construction drawings in just three months, shortening the usual cycle by 40%. During construction, whether it was overnight adjustments to foundational plans to resolve pipeline conflicts or immediate optimizations to meet noise reduction requirements, the team consistently responded quickly, ensuring high-quality project advancement through “full-chain overlapping promotion and round-the-clock efforts on all fronts.”

From meticulously drawn design blueprints to tangible happy scenes, the Nanchang community embedded sports venues project is not just a series of vibrant numbers and new buildings, but a heartfelt and warm response to the needs of the people. It signifies that more citizens can enjoy the joy of sports right at their doorstep, and it means that the happiness and sense of gain brought by the “15-minute fitness circle” are quietly spreading to every corner of the city.
