“What does a chip look like under a microscope?” “How long does a robot take to think when playing Go?” At the Science Festival, the AI and Robotics exhibition area was surrounded by students. Xiong Hui, a science popularization lecturer from the Space Communication Research Institute of Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, patiently answered students’ questions while controlling a chess-playing robot, engaging in intense matches with the students.

“Chips are the core foundation of the information technology industry, spanning critical fields such as AI, 5G communication, smart terminals, and aerospace, directly related to national technological independence and industrial security, making them the ‘heart’ of modern technology,” Xiong Hui explained to the students.

At the Chongqing Domila Robotics Science Popularization Base booth, Zhang Muziqi, a first-year student at Chongqing No. 8 Middle School, and his classmates controlled a simulated driving test robot, maneuvering it through an S-shaped obstacle course and a single-sided bridge, ultimately parking it in a designated spot, replicating every aspect of the driving test.

“I have only seen the Type 95 automatic rifle in videos before, and today I finally got to experience it hands-on!” said student Yang Haoran, a military enthusiast. At the Digital National Defense Military Experience Center, the Type 95 automatic rifle simulation firing system realistically replicates the weight, size, and operation of the Type 95 rifle; the infrared activation method allows for simulated shooting, which he found exhilarating. Meanwhile, interactive exhibition areas featuring popular science fiction books, drone equipment, robot soccer, motion-sensing mosquito repellent, and traditional Chinese medicine science attracted long lines of students.

“With the theme ‘Intelligent Innovation for the Future, Starting a New Journey,’ we collaborated with over 20 universities, research institutions, and technology companies, including the New Energy Vehicle Science Popularization Innovation Base of Chongqing University and the West (Chongqing) Science City Germplasm Creation Science Center of Southwest University, to create 12 major interactive science exhibition areas covering AI and robotics, health science, creative intangible cultural heritage, and biological sciences,” said a representative from Chongqing No. 8 Middle School. Students were able to touch and participate in scientific practices, which helps ignite their passion for technological innovation and allows them to experience the infinite charm of technology up close.

To enrich the content of the Science Festival, this year’s event also invited three experts: Professor Zhang Lei from Chongqing University, Director of the Key Laboratory of Biological Perception and Multimodal Intelligent Information Processing, Researcher and Distinguished Professor Duan Chenyang from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, and Researcher and PhD Supervisor Xie Jianping from Southwest University, to deliver cutting-edge popular science lectures in their respective fields, guiding students to broaden their academic horizons through exchanges and stimulating their innovative enthusiasm.

On the day of the event, students from subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and geography also created and directed their own science programs, showcasing the wonders of science in an artistic form, earning rounds of applause. The school also simultaneously unveiled the “Longxing” Science and Innovation Room, establishing a joint science popularization practice base between Longxing No. 8 Middle School and the New Energy Vehicle Science Popularization Innovation Base of Chongqing University, aiming to empower the construction of a new ecology for science and innovation education through deepening school-enterprise cooperation.

This year’s Science Festival was guided by the Yubei District Education Commission and the District Association for Science and Technology, organized by Chongqing Science and Technology Newspaper Co., Ltd., effectively bringing more quality science popularization resources into the campus, contributing to the enhancement of youth scientific literacy and fostering the cultivation of innovative talents for the new era.
