In recent years, with the popularity of smart long-term rental apartments, more and more smart apartments have emerged. The most important part of a smart apartment is its networking protocol. A good networking method can greatly reduce the construction costs, operational costs, maintenance costs, and other unnecessary troubles and expenses for the apartment.
According to statistics, due to early promotion and mature technical solutions, the vast majority of apartments in the market now adopt the ZigBee networking method. However, a noteworthy signal is that many large apartment operators have stated this year that they are conducting evaluations of NB devices.
NB-IoT, or Narrowband Internet of Things, features low cost, wide coverage, many connections, low rate, low power consumption, and superior architecture. Major companies such as Huawei, ZTE, Telecom, Mobile, and Unicom have frequently taken action, increasing and deepening their layout and resource investment in NB-IoT.

Clearly, from the comparison in the table above:
1. Cost
Statistics show that the vast majority of apartments in the market currently use the ZigBee networking method. This networking method requires consideration of the gateway placement during the initial construction phase, which is very troublesome for already built apartments. Moreover, the price of gateways is not cheap, averaging two to three hundred, and when the number of households is large, the gateway also represents a significant cost. Additionally, these gateway devices can increase the failure rate and reduce system stability, thereby increasing management and maintenance costs. In contrast, NB-IoT is based on cellular mobile networks, does not require pre-assumed gateways, and costs are borne by tenants, resulting in lower construction costs and less secondary service.
2. Stability
ZigBee communication is based on the IEEE802.15.4 standard, operating in the 2.4GHz globally universal frequency band, which is easily interfered with and has a high device failure rate, leading to poor system stability. In contrast, NB-IoT is less susceptible to interference and has higher stability.
3. Coverage
ZigBee has a small coverage area and poor wall penetration capability, which places high demands on the placement of gateways, while NB-IoT has strong wall penetration capabilities and can reach places like underground parking lots.
4. Policy
The government is currently strongly supporting technology, and communication operators also provide substantial subsidies for NB-IoT construction.
Indeed, many manufacturers that originally used WiFi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee technologies for IoT solution design are paying close attention to technological advancements, and many have begun to develop products and solutions based on NB-IoT and other low-power wide-area networks, replacing the functions of ZigBee, Z-Ware, and WiFi in some scenarios. During this year’s China Household Appliances and Consumer Electronics Expo, Haier launched the first NB-IoT air conditioner, solving issues related to the complexity of WiFi configuration and weak signal penetration capabilities.
