Three Major Application Directions of Touch Screens: Commercial Display, Automotive, and New Retail

In recent years, with the rapid development of mobile internet and the Internet of Things, display devices have become increasingly important as a key interface for human-computer interaction. Displays are ubiquitous, and controlling everything through touch will be the norm in our future lives. In the future, the further development of new technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, AR/VR, biometrics, and big data will make commercial display, automotive, and new retail the three major application markets for touch screens.
1. Commercial Display
According to statistics from AVC, it is predicted that in 2018, the overall market for commercial displays in China will reach 58.88 billion yuan. In the future, competition among brands will be fierce, products will be continuously updated, and technology will be constantly innovated, with emerging demands in niche markets. The development of the Chinese commercial display market will remain very active, with new products, new demands, and new markets driving its future growth!
In the future commercial display market, the intelligence of commercial televisions will increase, competition for large screen splicing products will intensify, advertising machines will integrate new retail trends, and electronic whiteboards will scale in emerging markets. Every few years, a “high-growth” dark horse product emerges in commercial display. Over the past five years, LCD education displays and small-pitch LEDs have successively served as the leaders of doubling growth.
In 2017, the Ministry of Education emphasized the need for interoperability, interconnection, interoperability, and content sharing under intelligent and information-based conditions, which actually underscores the need for “industry standardization” in software development. The demands for horizontal compatibility, vertical compatibility, and backward compatibility require the touch of interactive display interfaces to be more humanized, highlighting characteristics such as user operation habits and ease of touch.
Against the backdrop of the development of intelligence, digitization, and big data industries, the total demand for large-screen displays, especially high-end visualization screens, continues to grow. In the digital signage market, sensors, interaction, and display, supported by the cloud, form an organic application system. Future application scenarios for commercial displays will include electronic government, tourism, facility management, and healthcare.
Commercial displays are market-oriented; devices are not just display terminals but are increasingly becoming carriers that integrate new technologies such as computer technology, sensing technology, touch technology, and human-computer interaction technology. This shows a broad development prospect and huge market opportunities.

2. Automotive Field
With the increasing maturity and improvement of intelligent automotive application technologies, the rigid demand for human-computer interfaces in vehicles will further enhance the demand for display touch panels. Along with the development of new technologies such as autonomous driving and 5G mobile networks, the demand for in-car displays in current smart cars has undergone significant changes.
Currently, China is the largest automotive market in the world, with annual car purchases ranging from 24 to 30 million. Xin Guobin, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, revealed that the government has initiated related research and is formulating a timetable to stop the production and sales of traditional energy vehicles. The Chinese industrial sector predicts that by 2025, total car sales in China will reach 35 million, with new energy vehicles accounting for at least one-fifth of total sales. It is also stated that by 2040, all cars will be fully electrified.
Currently, automotive display screens can be divided into four categories: instrument display screens (Cluster, used to display various information), head-up displays (HUD, used to project information onto the windshield), center information displays (CID, for audio, navigation, air conditioning control, etc.), and rear seat entertainment displays (RSE, configured behind the headrests of the front seats); the first three are factory-installed in-car displays, while the latter is an aftermarket display.
In the future, the layout of human-computer interfaces in intelligent vehicles will be more user-friendly. Center displays and rear seat entertainment displays will primarily be configured for touch interaction. The center display (CID) will not see significant changes in audio, navigation, and air conditioning control applications, but future designs and touch operations will be more user-friendly. Panel manufacturers such as JDI, Sharp, Innolux, AUO, LGD, and BOE are fiercely competing in the automotive display market.
The information exchange between vehicles also reflects the broad application prospects of future cars in the field of intelligent technology. Therefore, world-renowned automotive companies such as BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, GM, Ford, Toyota, and Honda have formulated future electrification strategies. Meanwhile, explorers of pure electric vehicles like Tesla and domestic automakers such as BYD, BAIC, Chery, Geely, Lifan, and Changan are also making strides in the field of automotive intelligent technology.
Although the applications of in-car center screens and rear seat entertainment displays are single, the scenarios for their use and the demand for panels are substantial. In addition to cars, airplanes, high-speed trains, public buses, and taxis are all application scenarios for display panels, with a massive demand and broad market prospects.
3. New Retail. The new retail driven by 5G, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence provides a broader market for large touchscreen display technology products, with sales expected to approach 12 billion dollars by 2019.
Over the past decade, tech giants such as Facebook, Amazon, Tencent, Apple, Alibaba, and Xiaomi have rapidly risen. At the same time, leveraging the rapidly developing internet and high technology, these companies have crossed into traditional industries, bringing profound and even disruptive impacts.
According to statistics from 127 listed retail companies in China, in the first half of 2018, the revenue growth rate of listed retail companies was as high as 21.63%. However, if we exclude the top 15 companies such as Alibaba, JD.com, Suning, and Yonghui, the remaining companies only saw a year-on-year growth rate of 1.75%. This is enough to show that 2018 was still a year of rapid growth for new retail. Internet giants are continuously integrating new technologies such as big data, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence with the retail industry, which has opened up vast market space for the application of display touch terminals.
For example, in Nike’s new retail store in Shanghai, customers can enter and experience the store by verifying their NIKEPLUS membership with the assistance of store athletes.
The experience game is mainly divided into three parts: ground jump, One Two One, and shuttle run. The combination of interactive visuals and stereo sound is quite impressive. During this process, new technology analyzes your running status, allowing you to better understand your sports needs and select suitable sports series shoes, which is well-received by consumers.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is an important component of the new generation of information technology. In the process of digital transformation, IoT can help enterprises connect the physical world with the digital world and form a cycle of perceiving the physical world through the digital world and then controlling the physical world. Meanwhile, artificial intelligence (AI) can make such cycles more automated and efficient, thus truly integrating the physical and digital worlds. IoT and AI will become the “smart connection” genes in the nervous system of digital enterprises. For instance, in unmanned retail stores, various display interfaces and intelligent terminals are combined with electronic labels, settlement systems, etc., where touch plays an important role.
Human-computer interaction has been a common pursuit in the industry in recent years. Touch display terminals are not only outputs but also inputs. Digital signage is not just the execution end of commands but also the data collection end. Future digital signage will be the O2O fulcrum and cloud control service system. By accessing the internet and utilizing IoT perception, user behavior can be collected and analyzed to achieve precise marketing and other business models. This also reflects the value shift in this industry, moving from hardware profitability to operational profitability.
Specific interactive technologies, whether eye tracking, touch, body sensing, facial recognition, or gesture recognition, have made significant progress and are beginning to be applied in new retail. In the future, display technology will be ubiquitous, and interactive touch interfaces will be accessible in every aspect of life.
